Instructions for Benefit Users

First Time GI Bill ® Benefit User Checklist (Post 9/11, Montgomery Chapter 30 & 1606)
- Check your residency status on your admissions acceptance letter. If you were accepted as a non-resident, and you are using VA Education Benefits at UNCP, you can access the Residency Determination Service to request in-state consideration for tuition purposes as a VA Education Benefit recipient.
- Apply online for GI Bill ® benefits (for a child using transfer of entitlement Post 9/11 benefits you must wait until turning 18 or graduate from High School before applying).
- If you are unable to complete the online application for Post 9/11 benefits you can complete the pdf form located on the Department of Veterans Affairs website and submit a copy of the completed form to our office in person or by emailing veterans@uncp.edu.
- Upon completion of the online application, print, screenshot, or save the confirmation page. The confirmation page contains information the School Certifying Official can use to process your benefits while you await the delivery of your official Certificate of Eligibility (CoE).
- If you have already applied for your benefits and have your CoE on hand (email or paper copy) you don't need to reapply.
- Email a copy of the CoE or application confirmation page to veterans@uncp.edu.
- Register for classes in your BraveWeb account.
- Once you are registered for class you can request enrollment certification by selecting the menu option to Request VA Education Benefit Payment and completing the indicated steps.

First Time Benefit User Chapter 35 Dependents Education Assistance (DEA)
- Check your residency status on your admissions acceptance letter. If you were accepted as a non-resident, and you are using VA Education Benefits at UNCP, you can access the Residency Determination Service to request in-state consideration for tuition purposes as a VA Education Benefit recipient.
- Apply online for Chapter 35 Dependents Education Assistance benefits.
- You can select the option to complete the online application without logging in.
- Upon completion of the online application, print, screenshot, or save the confirmation page. The confirmation page contains information the School Certifying Official can use to process your benefits while you await the delivery of your official Certificate of Eligibility (CoE).
- If you have already applied for your benefits and have your CoE on hand (email or paper copy) you don't need to reapply.
- Email a copy of the CoE or application confirmation page to veterans@uncp.edu.
- Our team will contact you to obtain your full VA file number. This is the social security number of the veteran sponsoring your benefits.
- Register for classes in your BraveWeb account.
- Once you are registered for class you can request enrollment certification by selecting the menu option to Request VA Education Benefit Payment and completing the indicated steps.

Change of Program or Place of Training (CH30, CH33, CH35, CH1606)
- Check your residency status on your admissions acceptance letter. If you were accepted as a non-resident, you can access the Residency Determination Service to request in-state consideration for tuition purposes as a VA Education Benefit recipient.
- If you have previously used GI Bill benefits at another school or for another program, you will need to complete a Request for Change of Program or Place of Training to update your information to reflect your program of study at UNCP.
- Upon completion of the online application, print, screenshot, or save the confirmation page. The confirmation page contains information the School Certifying Official can use to process your benefits while you await the delivery of your updated Certificate of Eligibility (CoE).
- If you have already updated your benefits information to reflect UNCP and have your new CoE on hand (email or paper copy) you don't need to reapply.
- Email a copy of the CoE or application confirmation page to veterans@uncp.edu.
- Register for classes in your BraveWeb account.
- Once you are registered for class you can request enrollment certification by selecting the menu option to Request VA Education Benefit Payment and completing the indicated steps.

Veteran Readiness and Employment (Chapter 31)
- Check your residency status on your admissions acceptance letter. If you were accepted as a non-resident, and you are using VA Education Benefits at UNCP, you can access the Residency Determination Service to request in-state consideration for tuition purposes as a VA Education Benefit recipient.
- Email your Name, Banner Number, and VR&E counselor's contact information (Name and email) to veterans@uncp.edu
- Once you are registered for class you can request enrollment certification by selecting the menu option to Request VA Education Benefit Payment and completing the indicated steps.
