Note Taking Skills
1. Active Listening
•Don’t write down everything the professor says. Instead, listen and summarize the main points.
2.Connect to Prior Knowledge
•Put the information being discussed in your own words.
3.Recognizing Important Cues
•Professors demonstrate classic cues that identify which material is most important – vocal emphasis, pauses, gestures, repetition, and the amount of time spent on a concept.
4. Recording Main Ideas
•Create a balance between listening for and noting main ideas and listening to pertinent examples.
5. Reviewing & Revising
•Revisiting the material, highlighting, recopying, and revising notes all help you remember the material.

Academic Success Tips
1. If you have a problem in a class, talk with the professor. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
2. Any time you have a concern, see your academic advisor. He or she will be glad to help you get the assistance you need.
3. Don’t miss class! You will get behind and have to work twice as hard to catch up. If you must miss a class, contact your instructor in advance. It is your responsibility to make anything work that you miss.
4. Own your education and college experience! Decide what you want to gain from your experience here and make it happen.
5. Buy a personal calendar and enter the dates for all the tests, papers, and other assignments you have in all your classes.

Tips for Registering
TIPS FOR REGISTERING
Important Notation Definitions
Instructor override required: Many times an instructor will close a course so that they can discuss the course with the students registering or if it is meant for a specific group of students. You can contact the instructor to request that they allow you into their class. If they state yes, you will be asked for your Banner number. Provide it and they will update the
system to allow you in. You will still need to register for the course after they complete the override. Pre-requisite, Test Scores error: You will see this message if you do not have the test scores or prerequisites for the class. See your advisor or the department for the class if you feel that this is an error. Student Attribute: If you are told you are unable to register for a course due to a student attribute that means you are not in the population of students that the course is intended for. Some examples are Honors College, Business online-only students, or College Opportunity, students. If you are in one of these populations, see your contact for that group to
get the necessary override. What if the class is full? If a class is full and there are no seats remaining, you can waitlist the class. When you waitlist the class BraveWeb will email you when a spot comes available. Once the email is sent you will have a set amount of time to log onto BraveWeb and register for the class. If you do not register for the class then the spot will be offered to another student. Check your email at least twice a day
