The Pine Needle
The Pine Needle is a learning laboratory for the journalism side of our department. Mass Comm majors and non-majors work side-by-side to earn academic credit for writing, editing, designing and publishing the newspaper in print 14 times a year with 20 to 32 pages in two sections in each issue. The newspaper also is published online with a website, podcasts, and video news reports. The paper has won numerous national and North Carolina awards, including first place six years in a row from the American Scholastic Press Association in their annual newspaper competition among all universities with more than 2,500 students. The newspaper office is Old Main, room 253.
WNCP-TV
WNCP-TV provides hands-on experiences for broadcasting students to acquire and hone technical skills and put theory into practice. Local origination programming is produced by our students and faculty in class and as part of department extracurricular productions. WNCP-TV programs serve regional audiences via our cable channel and other distribution. Student broadcasters are guided by Professors Dr. Jamie Litty, Terence Dollard, and Dr. Jason Hutchens. Studio, control room, and editing suites are on the first floor of Old Main.
The Indianhead
The Indianhead, the University's student yearbook, is another learning laboratory of the Department. Students interested in book-length publications gain writing, editing and photography experience. It is advised by Sara Oswald. The office is on the second floor of the University Center Annex.
PRSSA
Students in our chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America conduct their business in Old Main. The professional organization cultivates a favorable and mutually advantageous relationship between students and public relations professionals. Our chapter is one of ten chapters on North Carolina university campuses and one of some 270 chapters on college campuses across the country. PRSSA is advised by Professor George Harrison.
