The Classification and Compensation unit at UNCP is dedicated to ensuring equitable salaries and wages for all employees, while maintaining accountability and fiscal responsibility. We support various aspects of position management, including classification, consultation, position design, and compensation analysis.
The Classification and Compensation Unit is responsible for the effective design and implementation of competitive compensation programs that meet the university’s needs. We provide guidance on salary administration policies and best practices to ensure fair and equitable classification and salary decisions for our workforce.
SHRA Positions and Employees
UNCP, as part of the North Carolina University System, utilizes the Office of State Human Resources Career Banding system to classify and compensate SHRA (Subject to the State Human Resources Act) positions across campus. SHRA positions are classified into Career-Banded classifications.
UNCP utilizes career-banding which is the classification and compensation system used for UNC System Schools. Career-banding groups positions performing similar kinds of work with similar knowledge, skill and ability requirements (KSA’s).
Positions Competencies—Each classification for SHRA can be broken down into one of three competency levels (Contributing, Journey, and Advanced).
The Classification and Compensation unit maintains the integrity of the Career Banding program for position classifications under the delegated authority from the UNC System Office and the Office of State Human Resources. The Classification and Compensation unit administers Career Banding for our university and serves as your resource for position development, classification, and compensation for all SHRA positions.

EHRA Classification/Compensation Resources
What is EHRA?
As part of the University of North Carolina (UNC) system, our university is generally subject to the State Human Resources Act. However, certain positions fall under the "EHRA" (Exempt from the Human Resources Act) category, including:
- Faculty
- Exempt Professional Staff (EPS) positions
- Senior Academic & Administrative Officer ("SAAO") positions
EHRA positions deliver the core-mission activities of the University: creating and disseminating knowledge through direct instruction, research, and public service; or performing professional-level duties that are integral to and uniquely supportive of that work. The purpose of each such position must be to substantially engage in the regular academic, educational, research, or public service/extension activities of the University. These positions require the exercise of professional expertise and discretion in determining the nature and content of the instructional, educational, research, or public service related activities, and in evaluating the effectiveness of such activities, and/or involve significant and independent interaction with participants in the University’s instructional, educational, research, or public-service programs.
For a position to be designated as EHRA, UNCP Human Resources (OHR) submits a request to the UNC System Office. Upon review, the UNC System President makes the final determination and issues a formal notification to OHR.
EHRA Minimum Qualifications:
EHRA positions typically require an advanced degree (master’s degree or above) or equivalent independent experience in comparable instructional or educational activities or a comparable record of independent research productivity.
