Dr. Xinyan Shi is an associate professor of economics in the Department of Economics and Decision Sciences. Prior to her appointment at UNCP, she worked at Central Michigan University for a year as visiting professor, and was employed as a consultant before joining the graduate program. Dr. Shi's research interests include microeconomic theory, game theory, industrial organization, information economics, behavioral economics, public economics and experimental economics. Her research has appeared in some leading economic journals, including Journal of Housing Economics (JHE), International Journal of Economic Theory (IJET).

Dr. Shi helped secure a funding of $750,000 from Department of Energy on a project “Development of an Economic and Efficient Biodiesel Production Process” from 2011 to 2014.

Dr. Shi strives to be actively engaged in serving both the university and communities. Since Fall 2012, she has been working with her students on business consulting projects for the community. The projects include Carolina Philharmonic (Fall 2012), Country Bookstore (Spring 2013), Pinehurst-Southern Pines Area Association of Realtors (Fall 2013) and St. Joseph’s the pines (Fall 2014). With this work, SJP was able to secure a $14,000 grant from the Cumberland Community Foundation in addition to a $1200 donation from a private company. Her projects were featured in the local newspaper ‘The Pilot’ both in 2014 and 2015.  In Spring 2015, she was nominated for Adolph Dial Award for Community Service.
