Graduate Programs

Each student is responsible for the proper completion of his or her academic programs, for familiarity with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke catalog, for maintaining the grade point average required, and for meeting all other degree requirements.  The academic advisor will counsel, but the final responsibility for a successful college career rest with the student. To learn more information about the goal's, degree requirements, and administration of the individual programs, visit the following links.  Click on the programs name to go to the website for that program.  "UNC Pembroke Catalog," files contains about the program from the UNCP Catalog in both HTML and PDF versions.

In addition to admissions requirements common to all programs, many programs have additional, program-specific requirements. Scroll below to view additional requirements (if any) for your intended program.

All M.A. AND M.A.Ed degree programs leading to graduate-level licensure by the NC Department of Public Instruction require that applicants hold a Standard Professional license in an appropriate licensure area except for School and Clinical Mental

Business Administration (M.B.A.) applicants who have not completed the Common Body of Knowledge, including calculus, as part of their undergraduate work will be required to complete appropriate CBK or Foundations Courses as pre-requisites. These courses do not count toward the degree hours.

Clinical Mental Health and Professional School Counseling:

In addition to the common School of Graduate Studies admissions requirements all applicants are required to:

1. Submit an essay detailing their experiences and goals relevant to professional counseling,
2. Submit three letters of recommendation from individuals with whom the applicant has professional affiliation, such as former faculty members or supervisors, and 
3. Participate in an interview with program faculty.

Non-Degree Seeking Students
Prospective students interested in registering for coursework to achieve credentialing in either of the graduate counseling areas should contact the Non-Degree Seeking Student Coordinator, Dr. Angela McDonald (angela.mcdonald@uncp.edu), for information. Requests to take courses for credentialing purposes must be made to the Coordinator and will be reviewed by program faculty. Non-degree seeking students, including graduates of either UNCP counseling program, should complete the School of Graduate Studies application form following the procedures for Enrollment for Enrichment Purposes and consult with the Non-Degree Seeking Student Coordinator two months prior to the start of the semester in which the students would like to register for courses. Students who are permitted to take courses as non-degree seeking students will attend an orientation session with the coordinator. No degree seeking students are not permitted to take field placement courses at UNCP in either counseling program

Elementary Education program requires that teachers must hold an “A” license or be eligible to hold an “A” license at the time of application. Two years full-time teaching experience is recommended but not required.

Master of Arts in Teaching applicants should not have any licensure, but must have a bachelor's degree appropriate for the licensure area they seek. Undergraduate pre-requisites may become part of a student's required course work if it is necessary for successful completion of graduate courses in the content area. There are no pre-requisite education courses for any M.A.T. program.

Music Education Two years of teaching experience prior to admission is required for the Music Education program.

Nursing

  • Possess a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from accredited NLN or CCNE School of Nursing.
  • Possess an unencumbered RN license to practice as registered nurse in North Carolina
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in undergraduate study.
  • Submit competitive scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) with scores not older than 5-years. GRE or MAT is waived if an applicant’s cumulative undergraduate GPA is 3.5 or higher.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation from instructors, supervisors or professional colleagues, two of which must come from individuals with a minimum of a master’s degree in nursing.
  • Submit a copy of your resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Submit a statement of purpose describing applicant’s experience and objective in undertaking graduate study in the chosen specialty.
  • Recommend one year of nursing practice experience.
  • Be available for an interview if requested; this might be a phone interview with admissions committee.

Note: Graduates of BSN programs greater than 5-years must demonstrate competency in basic health assessment, nursing research, pathophysiology, and pharmacology.

  • Copy of current BCLS certification by the American Heart Association
  • Copy of physical health examination and immunizations as required by the University and Department of Nursing
  • Copy of professional liability insurance – all students must present evidence of coverage annually in the amounts of $1 million/$6 million due to clinical practicum requirements of the graduate program.

Public Administration: All applicants are encouraged to take The Graduate Record Exam (GRE); as it is the required examination for the program. In addition, applicants are to submit an essay describing their academic and professional preparation and reason(s) for seeking admission to the program. Essays should be one or two pages in length and make clear what the applicant brings to the program and what s/he hopes to gain from it.

Reading Education Program: One year of teaching experience, and 
three professional references of which one should be a current administrator/supervisor who is familiar with your teaching/career goals.

School Administration: applicants must have completed three years of teaching prior to admission to the program. Those who are currently in their third year may apply, but no courses may be taken until after the third academic year of experience is concluded. Two recommendations must be submitted by current administrators; both should be familiar with your teaching, one of them must be the current building principal. If the principal changes after you submit your application, please update your application and request an additional recommendation from the new principal. In addition, the applicant must submit in writing his/her answers to the following questions:

  1. Why do you want to become an administrator (principal, coordinator, etc.)?

  2. As an administrator, what communication approaches would be most effective for you?

  3. How would you delegate responsibilities to others?

  4. How would this administrative position be most rewarding to you?

  5. What do you consider to be your major strengths as an administrator?

Add-on Licensure in School Administration: Admission to this non-degree program is highly selective. Applications from those with exceptionally strong academic credentials and test scores who currently hold an administrative position will be most favorably reviewed. Applications to this program which do not meet all criteria will be reviewed for admission to the degree program.

Social Studies Education: Applicants to the M.A. or the M.A.T. degree programs submit a letter with their application. The letter should describe what the applicant hopes to gain from the program and, in light of her or his current philosophy of social studies education, how the applicant assumes the program will affect classroom practices.

Social Work: Recommendations should be requested from professional supervisors or university faculty who are not members of the UNCP Social Work Department.
