Grand Canyon National Park

Our trip culminated at the Grand Canyon National Park. We spent two nights on the south rim and were able to enjoy the awesome beauty of the world's most famous canyon. After traveling through different regions of the Colorado Plateau, we were back to essentially where we began, stratigraphically. The layers of rock visible at the Grand Canyon are equivalent to those seen at Frenchman Mountain (east of Las Vegas). The difference is that here, they are horizontal. Therefore, a close inspection of the great unconformity requires hiking into the canyon's inner gorge. (A trek this group did not make.) The image below includes a view of the widest section of the Grand Canyon, the Bright Angel Creek side canyon, and the Bright Angel Fault.
