Student Awards

Each year the Department of Geology and Geography bestows several awards to outstanding students. Descriptions of the awards and past recipients are provided below.

Thomas E. and Cheryl E. Ross Scholarship:

Awarded in the late spring each year by the Department of Geology and Geography to a student focusing on Geography (either as a track in the Geo-Environmental Studies major or a Geography minor) or who participates on the UNCP team for the NC Geography Bowl.


  • A minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Completed at least six semester hours of geography courses
  • Must not be graduating in the current semester
  • Recipient must participate in the NC Geography Bowl
  • A 500-1,000 word topical essay, submitted by March 1 each year

The 2015-16 essay topic is The Geography of Climate Change: Physical and Human Impacts. Please be sure to provide appropriate references using the AAG Style Sheet. To submit your your information, including your topical essay, visit the submission page.


*New* Student Cartography Competition:

Conducted in unison with the annual PURC Symposium, this competition recognizes student accomplishments in cartography and geospatial technologies. Students from any major and any year are welcome to submit a map for consideration.
