2011-2012

  • Regular member meetings this academic year are being held on the first and third Wednesdays of every month at 11:10 a.m. in Room 236 in Old Main.
  • About 12 of us went on an overnight trip to the Triangle to visit Articulon, a PR agency, and to attend the North Carolina Public Relations Seminar at UNC CH. We visited Articulon on Oct. 31 and attended the seminar on Nov. 1, so spending Halloween night in Chapel Hill is an experience some of us wlll never forget!   • We sponsored a Gospel Concert at Berea Baptist Church on November 12 to benefit Sacred Pathways, Inc., a non-profit organization that helps the hungry, the addicted, the dislocated, and persons dealing with all kinds of emergency situations. Six musical acts appeared, and the event gathered a lot of food donatons.
  • A representative from Sacred Pathways, Inc. spoke at the chapter's meeting on November 9th to explain the organization's mission and to thank us for our help.
  • Janna Blue attended the National Conference in Orlando in October. Way to go, Janna!

2010-2011

  • We received word in October that we had earned the "Star Chapter Award" for meeting eight of ten criteria required by the national office. Congratulations and hooray to us!
  • We sent many members to the North Carolina Public Relations Seminar in Chapel Hill in November.
  • We started a Facebook page to help us communicate better.
  • We hosted the 2nd Annual "Make Par for PR" Golf Tournament, which saw about 12 teams participate. We raised about $2,250 for ourselves, which is an improvement from last year.
  • Christopher Peterkin and Janna Blue attended a regional PRSSA meeting at East Carolina University in the Spring.
  • Chris Kimball won the "Outstanding Contribution to PRSSA" award at the annual awards luncheon.

2009-2010

  • We sponsored a booth at the Annual Pembroke Day.
  • We continued our tradition to send members to the North Carolina Public Relations and Marketing Seminar held each fall at the William F. Friday Center for Continuing Education at UNC Chapel Hill.
  • Our big event was our first "Make Par for PR" Golf Tournament fundraiser, held at the Pinecrest Golf Club in March. It was chaired by Angie Taylor, and we raised approximately $2,000, which we will use to send members to regional and national conferences. About 10 teams participated. It was a lot of work, but we learned a lot, and everyone had a lot of fun. Click here for photos.

2008-2009

  • We hosted our 2nd Annual McDonald's Fundraiser night November 18, 2008. Our supporters purchased food at McDonald's across from campus between the hours of 6-9pm. A percentage of all purchases was donated to our fundraiser.
  • Ten members attended NC PRSA Day in Chapel Hill on November 20, 2008.
  • Departmental Awards Luncheon in April.
  • Our Chapter's banners were produced thanks to the help of Dr. Lee Phillips.
  • Twelve members participated in our first Relay for Life team to raise funds for a cure to cancer.
  • Five members attended the NC PR Day at NCSU on April 6
  • Several members attended an Etiquette Dinner at the UC Annex on April 15 to enhance their social skills.
  • A highlight of the year occurred April 22 when members of the NC PRSA, our sponsoring professional chapter, came here to conduct a career building workshop for all chapters in the region. The event was held at the UNCP Regional Center for Economic, Community and Professional Development. Panelists were Valerie Egel, operations manager for BlueCross/BlueShield of NC Foundation; Jay Eubank, director of career services at UNC-CH School of Journalism; Tracy Phelan Lathan, senior account manager, Catevo PR agency; Kristin Milam, public information officer , North Carolina Department of Insurance; and Sherwood Young, director of human resources, Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC.

2007-2008

  • In March, we had a new fundraising event -- McDonald's night. Yumm!
  • Meredith Best, NC PRSA chapter liaison and community relations representative for RBC Centura in Raleigh, was our guest speaker in April.
  • Four members attended the NC PR Seminar in Chapel Hill in November.
  • Jessica Bachovin was elected to attend the PRSSA Leadership Conference in San Francisco in February. She had a blast.
  • Members went to the Boys and Girls Club on March 17 to help decorate Easter eggs with the kids.
  • Thanks to a solicitation effort by senior members in the PR Campaigns class, Capstrat made a $500 donation to the chapter. They also invited us to their open house in April, and several members attended.
  • Several members attended the NC PR Day at NCSU in the spring.
  • Jimmy Autry, Fellow, PRSA, APR, and a UNCP Mass Communication alumnus, was our speaker at the departmental awards banquet in April. Mr. Autry serves as Senior Vice President of Flint Electric Membership Corporation outside Atlanta.

2006-2007

  • Several members attended the NC Public Relations Seminar in Chapel Hill in November.
  • Karen Mantzouris, Public Relations director of Southern Regional Area Health Education Center in Fayetteville, and a UNCP Mass Communication alumnus, was our guest speaker in the spring.
  • We had a "sweet" fundraising event in the spring -- Krispy Kreme Donut Sale!
  • Several members attended NC PR Day at NCSU in the spring.

2005-2006

  • Kelani Coakley edited our first-ever newsletter. 
  • Krista Lamm produced our new website at www.uncp.edu/prssa/.
  • Mark Payne, program coordinator for Higher Ground Educational Center, asked PRSSA to produce new brochures, a PowerPoint presentation, and a DVD to help promote Higher Ground programs. We agreed to undertake this very large project. Dan Henry worked on the brochure. Jackie Bower worked on the DVD.
  • Members designed and created chapter polo shirts.
  • Several members attended the NC PR Seminar in Chapel Hill in the fall.
  • Bob Robinson, president of Cambridge Commmunication Group in Chapel Hill, was our guest speaker in February. He made a generous donation to the chapter.
  • Kelani Coakley, Monica Jefferson, and Mr. Harrison attended a regional PRSSA conference at Appalachian State University in February. They got to go skiing!
  • Our spring fundraiser event was selling Pizza Hut cards.
  • Anna Smith, president, and Jean Hodges, former president and CEO of Hodges Associates in Fayetteville, were our guest speakers in March.
  • Several members attended the PR Day Regional Conference at NCSU in the spring.

2004-2005

  • Ten PRSSA members and faculty adviser George Harrison attended a PRSSA Convention in Raleigh at NC State on March 29-30, 2005. Various workshops were held. Event Planning, How To Do a Cover Letter, and The Do and Do-Not of Your Resume were some topics discussed. PRSSA National Vice President of Chapter Development Bridgette Wright spoke about fundraising ideas. To learn more, check out the National PRSSA website at www.prssa.org.

     

  • In September, members travelled to the School of Journalism at UNC Chapel Hill to hear a lecture by Harold Burson, former president of Burson-Marsteller.
  • In October, the Fund Raising Committee, chaired by Kelani Coakley, had a cookie sale to raise funds for membership dues.
  • Two members attended the NC PR Seminar in Chapel Hill in November.
  • The Events Committee, chaired by Star Collie, hosted Tammi Wright from the Crown Coliseum as a guest speaker in November.
  • As a community service project, members visited the Boys and Girls Club of Pembroke to help them make Easter eggs for smaller children.
  • We also held a Talent Showcase fundraising event on February 22 for victims of the Tsunami in Southeast Asia.
  • Natasha Tajman represented the chapter at the National Leadership Conference in Dallas, TX March 10-13.

2003-2004

  • The newly formed UNCP-PRSSA chapter was organized in the fall semester, 2003. (A previous chapter had been active in the early to mid-90's.).
  • We received our charter in December, 2003. McKenzie Cook was the chapter's first president. Mr. George Harrison was the faculty advisor. Mr. Joseph Gaitens, APR, Vice President of Epley Associates, was the NC PRSA liaison and professional advisor.
  • The 22 charter members and officers were: McKenzie Cook, (Fall President), Curtis Henderson (Spring President), Julia Ayers (Vice President), Kirsten Johnson (Secretary); Lisa Stewart (Treasurer),Scott Ammons (PR Liaison), Erin Berry (Historian),Alicia Harvin, Chris Nicolini, Shauna Fullwood, Adrienne Barber, Robin Connolly, Alyson Bernava, Nathan Walls, Lauren Newsome, Elizabeth Butler, Vancine Sturdivant , Alexander Creammer, Toni Champ, Jackie Colonel, Daniel Henry, and Krista Lamm .
  • Our main project was designing and distributing flyers for the Pan Hellenic Council. We earned about $200.00 for doing it.
  • Joseph Gaitens, APR, Vice President of Epley Associates, was our guest speaker in March.
