Academic Resource Mentors (ARMs) are paraprofessionals that address students' unique academic concerns to guide them in achieving academic excellence. ARMs focus on student growth and empower them to become self-directed learners that understand their academic responsibilities.
We are upper-class students who are successful academically, involved in campus life, and have a desire to help college students successfully manage their transition to UNCP.
We serve as a first year advocates, are guides to campus resources, host workshops, work one on one with students to assist in study skills as well as basic adjustment to college and serve as a role model for academic, co-curricular and leadership behaviors.
Now Meet the Staff:
Hello, my name is Christy Adams and I am a junior majoring in psychology. I chose to transfer to UNCP because I wanted to further my education, and I felt that UNCP would be a great option because of the smaller class sizes. I also commute from Southern Pines and I am a nontraditional student so I felt that the convenient location and flexible class schedules for commuter and working students would be beneficial. I chose to take on the position of being a mentor because I love listening and helping others to the best of my ability. I for one know that whether you are just transitioning into college or a continuing student, everyone may face difficult obstacles, but you can overcome them with much determination and motivation to achieve your goals. No matter your circumstances or age, everyone can be successful! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or come by! I will be waiting to listen with open ears!
My name is Alysia DeJesus and I am a Psychology major at UNCP. I chose to come to UNCP because I like the small hometown and the southern hospitality. I am a mentor so that I can work with and help students on their path here at UNCP. I am a very open minded person and I love to just sit down and talk. So just stop by and visit me if you need anything or just need to talk. I am always ready for a good conversation!
Hello, everyone! My name is Megan Folio, and I am a senior majoring in Business Marketing and Management, with a minor in Public Relations. I currently hold the position of secretary in PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America), and I am a member of the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success. I am from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and I understand that transitioning into the college environment is not always easy. As a mentor, I enjoy assisting others and hope to implement positive energy while promoting student success here at UNCP. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to stop by and visit me!
My name is Victoria Newkirk and I am a junior History: Social Studies Education Major with a Geography Minor. I am from Duplin county, and I enjoy reading, helping others, and listening to a variety of different genres of music. Being an Academic Resource Mentor allows me to teach others the skills they need to succeed in college. This position enables me to relay to others my personal struggles, failures, and successes in all of these areas, while helping them troubleshoot their own areas of difficulty. I believe that being successful in college requires collaboration and continual self- improvement, which is what mentoring is all about! It is truly a pleasure to encourage someone, give them the advice and skills they need, and watch them flourish!
