A discussion of "Chicora and the Little People,” with author Arvis L. Boughman and illustrator/artist Delora Cummings will be held Thursday, June 30th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm in the University Center Annex.
Published in May 2010 by Llumina Press, “Chicora and the Little People” is the first picture book based on a tale shared by Clarence Lowrey, Lumbee historian, in his book "The Lumbee Indians of North Carolina."
Chicora, the main character in the story, tells an incredible story about the little people and the new multicolored corn she has found. She must find a way to convince her people that this new corn is good to eat and worth celebrating. The watercolor illustrations add to the telling of this ancient tale. The illustrations are derived from pictures taken of the late Rudolph Carter and Chicora Lowry (Mr. Rudolph’s granddaughter).
There will be a discussion of the book with Arvis Boughman, Delora Cummings, and Nora Dial-Stanley (Lumbee storyteller) followed by a question and answer session.
This event is sponsored by the Department of American Indian Studies. It is free and open to the public. Mr. Boughman's book will be available for purchase and for him to sign at the event. For more information, contact Dr. Mary Ann Jacobs at mary.jacobs@uncp.edu.
