how to become a TUtor

Thank you for your interest in the Tutor position for the Tutoring Program (UPASS). UPASS stands for University of North Carolina @ Pembroke Academic Success Services. It is a wonderful opportunity to help your peers succeed in their academic endeavors.

In order to be considered for a Tutor position, the selection criteria are as follows:

  • A grade of B- or better in the course(s) you are interested in leading a study session (see attached for list of courses)
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Firm command of the course material
  • Higher order thinking skills
  • Proactive learning strategies
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Dependability
  • Assertiveness

In addition to the application, you must submit a Faculty Recommendation Form (requires Microsoft Word) for each subject/course you would like to conduct a study session for. You only have to submit this form only once, unless you decide to add a new subject area.

Before you begin, there will be a training session at the beginning of fall/spring semester, which will cover program policy and procedures. At this time, you can elect to be a paid tutor or use the hours towards your community service requirements for your campus organization. You can even schedule your session(s) at your convenience during UNCP class hours (Monday thru Thursday 9 am-9 pm and Friday 9 am-4 pm).
