Q1: What is a "W"?

A: Students receive a "W" on their transcript when they withdraw from a course after the deadline to make schedule changes without penalty. You can check the last day to withdraw from a class by viewing the Academic Calendar. You can view the calendar by clicking here. Return to Top of Page

Q2: Will getting a "W" hurt my GPA ?

A: No. Receiving a "W" does not affect your GPA. However, too many "W's" on your transcript will not look good to prospective employers and graduate schools. Medical School Admission Boards are especially critical of "W's" on a student's transcript. "W's" also sometimes impact Federal Financial Aid. if you are receiving aid, check with your Financial Aid counselor prior to dropping a course to determine how it affects your situation.

Q3: When should I take a "W"?

A: If you find that you are in a class that you do not need or if you know that you are going to make unsatisfactory progress in the class, you should consider withdrawing from the class.

Q4: How do I withdraw from a class?

A: Until the end of the Drop/Add period, you can drop the class in Braveweb. After the Drop/ Add period ends, you will need to get a "Drop/Add Form" from your academic advisor or the Office of the Registrar. You can also download the form from the Registrar forms page. You will need your academic advisor to sign the withdrawal slip and in some cases your instructor will need to sign. You will turn in the completed withdrawal form to the Office of the Registrar.

Q5: When is the last day to withdraw from a class without a "W"?

A:You can check the last day to withdraw from a class by viewing the Academic Calendar. You can view the calendar by clicking here.

Q6: When is the last day to withdraw from a class with a "W"?

A: You can check the last day to withdraw from a class by viewing the Academic Calendar. You can view the calendar by clicking here.

Q7: Can "W's" effect my Financial Aid?

A: Yes, it can effect your Financial Aid. You have to pass 2/3 of your attempted classes in order to receive Financial Aid. If you receive a "W" in a course it counts as an 'attempted' class. By withdrawing from classes, although it does not go against your GPA, you are not getting a passing grade either and that could effect your eligibility for Financial Aid. If you are uncertain of the impact of your withdrawal, you should contact your financial aid counselor.

Q8: How do I withdraw from the University?

A: In order to withdraw from the University, a student must complete the "Application to Withdraw" and submit it with the appropriate signatures to the Office of the Registrar.
