Newy Scruggs '94 could be called a one-man sports media conglomerate.
Before he became an Emmy Award-winning sports anchor for the NBC affiliate in Dallas, Texas, and president of Newdawg Productions and Top Dawg Development companies, he was a student who needed a scholarship to attend Pembroke State University.
Scruggs earned a scholarship and graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communication.
He already had a reputation on campus as a go-to media guy for athletics, and he had begun building his broadcasting resume as a part-time, weekend sports anchor at WBTW-13, the Florence, S.C., CBS affiliate.
From one of the nation’s smallest television markets, Scruggs climbed the ladder of success at KVUE-TV in Austin, Texas, WEWSTV in Cleveland, Ohio and KCOP in Los Angeles, Calif., before landing at KXAS-TV in the Dallas-Fort Worth market.
The Dallas Cowboys, the Cleveland Browns and the Los Angeles Lakers are among the professional sports teams he has covered. He can do a good imitation of Shaquille O’Neal, too.
The sky is the limit for his career going forward. It’s a glamorous life under the lights, surrounded by celebrities, but his family and roots keep him grounded. His wife of nine years, Lainie, and he have three girls, Savannah Reese, 7, Sienna Rose, 5, and Sophia Raquel, 5 months.
Scruggs returns often to his home and his roots. He was appointed to the UNCP Board of Trustees in 2009 and was sworn in with his parents, Albert and Theresa Scruggs of Fayetteville, N.C., in attendance.
Before joining the board, Scruggs had begun to pay forward on the scholarship he received as a student. Legend has it, in an interview with the scholarship committee, he vowed that if they invested in him he would repay the university.
In 2003, he established the Newy Scruggs Sports Broadcasting Endowed Scholarship. Nick Phillips, editor of the Pine Needle student newspaper and a dual journalism/broadcasting major, is the 2011-12 recipient of the scholarship.
In 2007, Scruggs returned to the university with several fraternity brothers to establish an endowed scholarship to honor Dr. Sylvester Wooten, a longtime university administrator, who advised Scruggs’ fraternity, Omega Psi Phi. Dr. Wooten, who is retired, was present with his family for the signing of the scholarship.
In 2010, Scruggs returned to meet the recipient of his scholarship at the annual Scholarship Recognition Dinner. He also delivered remarks on behalf of all UNCP’s donors.
In his comments, Scruggs remains bullish on his university and its broadcasting program. “We have a tremendous broadcasting program at UNCP. You can come here and make it. I came here because the broadcasting program gives hands-on experience.”
Scruggs said he owes a great deal to his university. “Great schools are great because people keep putting money back into them, he said. He is a man who has followed his dream and never forgot the people who helped him become successful.
“I am living my dream, and I’ve done things I never thought I would do,” he said. That dream includes doing what he loves best – talking sports, with a major market audience looking on. He has won five Lonestar Emmys to date and owns radio, television and Internet production companies and a real estate investment company.
