I joined the UNCP faculty in 2010 after several blustery winters in the northeast at Syracuse University where I earned my doctorate in Composition and Cultural Rhetoric. Through my studies in African American Rhetoric and Literacy, Black Feminist Theory, Composition, and Women and Gender Studies, I developed an interest in how cultural groups use literacy, language, and the teaching of writing persuasively to solve or prevent crises. So far, I’ve conducted this research by analyzing the project of healing within African American self-help books, inspirational literature, and film. I am excited about this work.
The courses I teach at UNCP reflect my interest in writing, rhetoric, culture, and gender. My first-year composition courses have ranged from explorations into the politics of education, hip-hop as a subculture, and music as an argument. Additionally, I’ve developed and taught special topics courses on Black Women’s Writing and Rhetoric (ENGS 4170) and African American Rhetorical Traditions (ENGS 4120). My goals in teaching these courses are to expose students to a wide variety of texts and perspectives, help them gain an understanding of how rhetoric and power operates within communities, and facilitate them in honing their writing and analytical skills.
Whenever I am asked what I enjoy about teaching at UNCP, my first answer is always the students. Before joining UNCP, I had a diverse set of teaching experiences that included teaching high school English in my home state of VA, co-designing and teaching a rigorous college pilot program in the heart of Manhattan, NY, and teaching Women and Gender Studies courses at Syracuse. What I continue to find remarkable about UNCP students is their passion, their critical eye, and the drive so many of them have to succeed.
