Born and raised in Chile, South America I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English/Spanish Education and TESOL at The University of La Serena in 1990. After that, I enrolled in the Master’s Degree Program in Linguistics at The University of Chile, where the main focus was on the study, analysis and research in the fields of English and Spanish Linguistics. At present, I am about to complete my Master’s Degree Program in Applied Linguistics to the Teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language at the University of Jaen in Spain. I have twenty one years of teaching experience in the fields of English as a Foreign Language and English/Spanish as a Second Language in which I have taught at all levels of education (Elementary, Middle and High School, as well as at Higher Education) in my native country (Chile) as well as overseas ( England and U.S.A.). I have been teaching in the American school system since 2001 up to date. During all this period I have been working in the ESL/Spanish Program teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language as well as English as a Second Language to the brand new foreign students enrolled in the American school system, and I have been using the most effective and useful Second language teaching methodologies. My teaching experience at UNCP dates back to 2002 as I used to be a Spanish adjunct instructor for the then Department of English, Theatre and Languages. In August 2010 I was hired by the Department of Foreign Languages as an adjunct to teach some Spanish language classes. I am passionate about teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language to English-speaking students at the Higher Education level, and I have excellent communication skills. My goal as an instructor is to quickly develop a strong rapport with my students in order to promote a positive classroom atmosphere that can help them access higher levels of language use that can allow them to create more precise and effective communication. I believe that critical thinking and cultural awareness are crucial skills for this process, along with a solid grounding in the fundamentals of Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition. Personally, I think I have many things to offer my students like my teaching experience, my professional development, as well as the knowledge of the culture, traditions and civilization of the countries where the Spanish language is spoken. My ideal work environment is a multicultural and diverse place with students coming from different backgrounds and cultures, and always motivated to learn Spanish as a means of international communication.
