Gender Issues and Mental Health Counseling

Dr. Angela Holman

Department of Psychology

When:  Wednesday, May 4th @ 10 a.m.

Where:  Sampson, Room 231

Dr. Holman will discuss gender in relation to the diagnosis and treatment of mental health concerns for men and women, with an emphasis on expression of depression and anxiety concerns. The discussion will include a critique of traditional psychotherapy approaches and an overview of feminist approaches to counseling. Some of the principles of feminist approaches to counseling that will be discussed are advocacy, client-counselor collaboration, counselor self-disclosure, and analysis of power in the social context. Recent research related to gender and mental health will be also reviewed.
