2006-07 Distinguished speaker series
The 2006-07 series is presented by the Office of Student Activities to enhance the cultural and political make-up of the University and surrounding community. Tickets for all Speaker Series events are $10 each. Seating is general admission, but reservations are recommended.

Tuesday, September 12
Nancy Grace hosts CNN Headline News daily legal affairs show. One of television’s most respected legal analysts, Grace came to CNN from Court TV, where she hosts the live daily trial coverage program Closing Arguments. She also has appeared as a legal expert on CNN’s Larry King Live, ABC's The View and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Her book, “Objection!” was published in April 2005 and was an instant New York Times bestseller.
Grace joined Court TV from the Atlanta Fulton County District Attorney’s office where she served for a decade as special prosecutor of felony cases involving serial murder, rape, child molestation and arson.

Mo Rocca, contributor to NBC’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno and former correspondent for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, is known for his wacky, tongue-in-cheek news reports and hilarious commentary. He is regularly seen on VH1’s I Love...series. Rocca delivers informed commentary on current news and the media coverage of them. He takes audiences behind the scenes of America’s most popular news satire program with never-before-seen clips from The Daily Show and others.
A former president and writer of Harvard’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals, Rocca is no stranger to the stage. His acting credits include the role of “Doody” in the Southeast Asia Tour of “Grease.” A regular panelist on NPR’s Wait, Wait ... Don't Tell Me!, Rocca is also a frequent commentator for Countdown with Keith Olbermann, Larry King Live and Fox News Network.

Yolande Cornelia “Nikki” Giovanni, is a world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist and educator. Over the past 30 years, her outspoken views brought the world to her door. One of the most widely read American poets, she prides herself on being a Black American, a daughter, a mother and professor of English.
Giovanni has written more than two-dozen books, including poetry, illustrated children’s books and three collections of essays. Her book, “Racism 101,” examines race issues from all angles. Her three most recent volumes of poetry, “Love Poems,” “Blues: For All the Changes” and “Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea,” won the NAACP’s Image Award. The “Nikki Giovanni Poetry Collection,” a spoken-word CD, was a finalist for a 2003 Grammy Award. Since 1987, she instructed writing and literature at Virginia Tech.

One of the nation’s most outspoken conservatives, Pat Buchanan is a political analyst and regular contributor to MSNBC. A three-time presidential candidate, Buchanan served as co-host of CNN’s Crossfire for almost 20 years and remains a panelist on The McLaughlin Group. A former White House speechwriter, Buchanan analyzes the day’s top political and cultural headlines. Audiences will be treated to a mind engaged by the issues and unafraid of voicing an informed articulate opinion on everything from national sovereignty to the future of conservative movement, one that Buchanan himself helped create.

One of the most widely recognized and admired sports commentators in the country, James Brown is a former co-host of FOX NFL Sunday, an informative and entertaining hour of football coverage. Since its inception 10 years ago, FOX NFL Sunday has enjoyed the largest viewing audience of any NFL pre-game show. Beginning with the 2006 NFL season, Brown will host The NFL Today on CBS and return to play-by-play of NCAA basketball on CBS.
Brown’s sports and entertainment career spans more than two decades. He joined FOX Sports in 1994, following 10 years with CBS Sports. He has worked Super Bowls, the 1992 and 1996 Winter Olympics, the NBA finals and the NCAA basketball tournament. While at CBS, he was also co-host of CBS Sports Saturday/Sunday a weekend anthology series.
Brown’s The James Brown Radio Show, broadcasts weekdays on Sporting News Radio. He is a reporter/correspondent for HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel and a boxing host for PPV, the pay-per-view division of Time Warner Sports (HBO). Brown is also the host of the nationally syndicated black talk show America's Black Forum.
