Treatment for Sexual Addiction:'the athlete's foot of the mind'
Like all addictions, sexual addicts must go though some type of recovery program to overcome the addiction. However, guilt prevents most addicts from going through any type of therapy.
Sex addicts tend to do whatever is necessary to find someone who will participate with them in their activities. They call sexual hotlines, search the Internet for sexual chat rooms and go to local clubs and bars for potential partners.
But guess what? Who would have imagined that some sex addicts spend $40,000 to $50,000 a year on sexual activities, according to Dorothy C. Hayden, CSW, and author of Therapy for Sexual Addiction…A Depth-Psychology Approach.
Hayden says “sexual addiction has been called the athlete’s foot of the mind: it is an itch always waiting to be scratched. The scratching however causes wounds and never alleviates the itch.”
There are 12-step recovery programs available for sex addicts. Most treatments are outpatient; however, those do not guarantee long-term recovery. The purpose of recovery programs is for the addict to have more control of their behavior.
In the 12-step recovery programs, three main steps are focused on in order to overcome sexual addictions:
- Remove yourself from people and/or places that could tempt you to engage in sexual activities
- Change your relationships with yourself and others (i.e. do not isolated yourself from those that love/care for you)
- Don’t be afraid to talk to others about your sexual experiences.
If you are addicted to sexual activities, the last step is very important. Seek professional help and DO NOT be afraid to talk openly about your addiction. Freedom is only achieved for the addict when they are willing to set aside their shame and guilt and express themselves in a honest way.
