STD’s at UNC Pembroke
By Megan Quinlan
UNCP has a number of prevalent STD’s on campus.
"The most common STD that we see on campus is Chlamydia, but we also see Gonorrhea, Genital herpes, Genital Warts and Trichomoniasis. Our department has worked very hard to educate students and the entire campus on HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases,”
Student Health Services staff Cora Bullard said. “This fall we performed more than 200 HIV/STD screenings for students.”
Chlamydia is caused by bacteria that can seriously damage a woman's reproductive organs. Symptoms may not be noticed or may be very mild and often go untreated. This disease causes problems such as irreversable damage to fertility. It is also the most reported
STD. Symptoms include burning, discharge, lower back pain, nausea, fever, bleeding, or pain during intercourse.
Gonorrhea is caused by bacteria which are found in moist places in the reproductive tract, which grows and multiplies. It can also be found in the eyes, mouth, throat, and anus. While some men may not have any symptoms they so sometimes appear. Symptoms include
a burning sensation, white, yellow, or green discharge, itching, soreness, and bleeding.
Genital Herpes is caused by two types of viruses (HSV-1) or (HSV-2), however HSV-2 is usually the cause of genital herpes. Signs are blisters around the infected area and after breaking, leave sores which take week to heal. One out of every five adolescents
to adults 12 and over has genital herpes. HSV-1 is herpes of the mouth or also knows as fever blisters.
Genital Warts are a type of HPV infection that are soft, moist, flesh colored bumps that could vary in size. There are over 40 different types of HPV infections and HPV cannot be seen. It is not common to develop health problems or symptoms with this virus.
Trichomoniasis is the most curable and common STD for mostly young women. The STD is caused by a parasite transmitted through intercourse. Most men don't have any signs or symptoms but if they do they are mild irritation, burning, or discharge. For women, symptoms
are yellow-green discharge and odor.
A few ways to prevent STD’s from occurring are abstinence and performing safe sex practices. Free condoms are available in most college campus’s student health service department.
