NUR 300 Transition to Professional Nursing

Description
This course focuses on the role of the professional nurse through an overview of the delivery of professional nursing practice and role transition into professional practice. Advanced theoretical concepts will be examined using the nursing process as a framework.

Objectives
1.Examines the paradigm of professional nursing: Man, environment, health, nursing. (Six interrelated professional roles)
2.Examines the scope of nursing practice from technical to professional to graduate inclusive of standards of practice, ethics, accountability, responsibility, and legalities. (Leader role)
3.Describes the purposes, philosophy, program objectives and nursing theory framework, of FSU/UNCP RN-BSN program. (Six interrelated professional roles)
4.Differentiates between the knowledge, skills, and roles of technical and professional nursing practice.(Six interrelated professional roles)
5.Describes various health care delivery systems inclusive of political, socioeconomic, and demographic variables. (Clinician role)
6.Explores role transition and socialization nursing issues. (Six interrelated professional roles)
7.Discusses the six interrelated professional roles of advocate, clinician, coordinator/collaborator, educator, leader, and researcher. (Six interrelated professional roles)
8.Discusses the professional nurse's responsibilities as a client advocate. (Advocate role)
9.Explores the importance of collaboration, coordination, and collegiality as change agent, in clinical practice and as a contributor to the nursing profession. (Coordinator/Collaborator role)
10.Examines how the nursing process is used to provide nursing care for clients, families, groups, and communities. (Clinician role)
11.Discusses how the teaching-learning process is incorporated in professional practice. (Educator role)
12.Explores own expectations of baccalaureate nursing education inclusive of personal and professional components. (Educator role)
13.Examines personal and professional values and style as a nurse working with others. (Leader role)
14.Describes the importance of and begins to use research in professional practice. (Research role)
15.Identifies characteristics of a healthy lifestyle and health promotion principles. (Educator role)
16.Selects a professional concept to examine.(Educator role)
17.Discusses change, critical thinking, and decision making processes. (Leader role)

Grading Policy
Grading Policy
**All students are expected to take the Cornell Critical Thinking Test. The score will not impact on a student's course grade. This reflects students' skills in reasoning, analysis, research, and decision-making relevant to the discipline of nursing. This test will be completed the first week of class.
Grading Scale and Attendance Policy
Refer to the UNCP Student Handbook.
Grade Components
Late assignments will not be accepted unless prior approval is given by the instructor. The final grade on any required assignment that is submitted LATE will be reduced by five points (5 points) for each day the assignment is late.

Professional Journey Notebook
50%
The transition into professional nursing is a journey that we all are on. We are just at different places along the journey. You will make rapid progress during this time in school, and the Professional Journey Notebook will record that progress
Group Presentation
15%
In small groups, research nursing's response or position on a major health care report or legislative issue. The oral presentation should include a detailed discussion of the report (who, what, when, where, why) and the impact on professional nursing practice. Provide a reference list and outline for classmates one the day of the presentation. (Example: IOM " To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System.)
Practice Issue Paper

Clearly expressing one's ideas and logically concluded opinions is a hallmark of a profession. As an applied discipline, nursing uses information from nursing science, other sciences and the humanities to provide care to others Select a health problem or concern that presents in your practice area. This paper must be in APA format. You are required to met with the course faculty once prior to writing this paper. At that meeting a detailed outline and draft of references are required.
Class Attendance and Participation
10%
Class attendance and punctuality are of absolute importance. There is no such thing as an "excused absence" since what happens in class cannot be duplicated or made up. Each absence will result in a 2-point reduction from the class attendance points (Note: In addition to losing the points for not attending a class, you are responsible for anything you miss, including assignments made or collected, materials presented, etc.)
