Description
Nursing 310 is designed to assist the nurse in expanding his/ her view of man. Man will be seen as a functioning, whole unit who with integrity and uniqueness uses symbols to communicate with his environment. The learner will explore not only how the patient's perceptions, values and roles are influenced by culture, but also how the perceptions and environment of the nurse affect the nursing system. Emphasis will be placed on the concepts of culture, belief systems, health and caring, and how these concepts form the foundation of Transcultural nursing. The diverse cultural background of southeastern North Carolina will provide a meaningful setting for this course.

Objectives
Course Objectives
1. Explains the role of culture in one's development of self and in the ordering of the environment. (Advocate)
2. Explores the influence of culture on one's belief systems especially those surrounding the concepts of health, illness, and self-care deficits. (Advocate)
3. Examines the relationship between folk and professional caring behaviors, beliefs, and practices. (Clinician)
4. Examines one's own cultural influences and explains how these are reflected in one's understanding of man, environment, health, and nursing. (Six interrelated roles)
5. Completes a cultural assessment of a client, and designs a nursing care plan that reflects culturally specific care. (Clinician)
6. Explains the characteristics of various cultural groups in Southeastern North Carolina. (Advocate)
7. Examines the client's rights in decision making based on cultural factors. (Advocate)
8. Identifies how the client works independently and/or cooperatively with health care providers and or lay providers in procuring health care. (Collaborator/Coordinator)
9. Describes the importance of and begins to use culturally based research related to cultural diversity. (Researcher)

Grading Policy
Grading Policy
Late assignments will not be accepted unless prior approval is given by the instructor. The final grade on any required assignment that is submitted LATE will be reduced by five points (5 points) for each day the assignment is late.

Class Attendance and Participation
10 %
Class attendance and punctuality are of absolute importance. There is no such thing as an "excused absence" since what happens in class cannot be duplicated or made up. Each absence will result in a 2-point reduction from the class attendance points(Note: In addition to losing the points for not attending a class, you are responsible for anything you miss, including assignments made or collected, materials presented, etc.)
To enhance the student's learning, the community at-large will become a learning labatory. Thus, student will be required to attend various events in the community. A large variety of such experiences will be identified to accomodate various work schedules. Thus, the attendance requirement applies only to the class room sessions. Please refer to the course schedule for details.
Journal
50 %
A journal is a record of experiences, ideas and reflections that have exerted important influence on you as a nurse. It provides a cumulative statement of changes and growth in the affective domain and their impact on the cognitive domain. The purpose of this journal will be to aide you in reflecting on the ideas, concepts, and terms presented in Nursing 310, merging these ideas with those gleaned from readings and/or activities, then applying these in your practice as a nurse.
Seminar Presentation
20 %
Using the guide study format, the seminar presentation is to provide the student to demonstrate critical thinking and oral communication skills while exploring one topic in depth In order to successfully complete this requirement the student will interact closely with the course faculty to develop the presentation. In addition, this assignment will allow feedback from peers further developing the collegial model. For detail specifics refer to the Seminar Presentation Evaluation sheet.
Poster Presentation
20 %
Poster presentations are becoming a popular method to demonstrate application of scientific concepts in professional practice. In this assignment the student will select a case from his/her practice and will demonstrate her/his cultural competence in implementing one of the six professional nursing roles. For detail specifics refer to the Poster Presentation Evaluation sheet.
