Description
From the UNCP Catalog:
CRJ 410. Organized Crime
A historical and contemporary review of the development and operation of organizations committed to criminal conduct. Emphasis will be placed on organized crime in America and the efforts to control it (especially federal RICO statutes). Spring. Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: CRJ 200.

Goals
From an indepth survey course, students will:
  • understand the conceptual/definitional framework of organized crime (as contrasted with the criminal behavior of individuals),
  • learn the details of the historical interaction of criminal groups, victims, ethnic groups, prosecutors, law enforcement & politicians in the U.S., and
  • examine current trends for the globilization of both criminal networks and law enforcement efforts.

Objectives
With their computer assisted preparation of lecture and reading notes students will learn how to prepare for and pass two extensive exams on a broad range of detailed material from a variety of sources, including the textbook. "Final Products" in the course will be
  • One set of bibliography cards.
  • One set of handwritten classnotes.
  • Two comprehensive exams taken.
  • One powerpoint show organized around a case or an issue in organized crime and prepared with text and images as if it were the indepth background for a made for TV documentary. The material should not be original, but sources should be thoroughly documented. The theme and organization of the presentation should be original for each student. In other words, you are not doing your own primary research, but you are doing your own secondary research: writing, editing and deciding on graphic design layout for your work. (Powerpoint makes it easy.)

Suggested due dates are announced as work progresses, but all work should be complete by the end of Reading Day, after that it is too late to make it up without making specific arrangements in writing for an incomplete.
