CSC 2260-01: Operating Systems and Networking

Description:

The student is introduced to the fundamentals of operating systems together with the basics of networking and communications.

Credit, 3 semester hours.
PREREQ: CSC 1750 and CSC 1760.

 

Course Content:

This course is an overview of operating systems and how they relate to network operations.  The course will cover the history of operating systems, disk operating systems, common operating systems such as Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linus, and Macintosh, operating systems security, Networks, and main frame operating systems.

 

Goals:

v     Understand the origins of operating systems and their importance to digital computers.

v     Understand how operating systems and networks are related.

v     Describe different operating systems and how they provide an interface to a digital computer.

v     List the important features of each operating system studied in class.

v     Identify the differences and similarities between operating systems and networks.

v     Identify security issues associated with operating systems and networks.

 

Objectives:

By the end of the semester the student will be able to:

v     Recognize and describe different modern operating systems.

v     Evaluate operating systems for specific tasks.

v     Describe the differences and similarities between operating systems and networks.

v     Evaluate security aspects of operating systems and networks.

Exams and Homework:

There are three interim exams and a comprehensive final exam.  There are no homework assignments in this class.

 

Grading Policy:

You are responsible for all material covered in class even if you are absent. The final grade will be a weighted average of the scores in the three exams and the final exam.  No homework in this class, but each student is responsible for the information in the textbook as well material covered in class lectures.  Attendance will be taken each class period.  One and one-half (1.5) points will be deducted from your final class average for each unexcused class period that you miss.

93 – 100 = A

88 – 89 = B+

80 – 82 = B-

70 – 72 = C-

60 – 62 = D-

 

 

Attendance Policy:

Attendance will be checked. You are expected to attend and participate in all classes.  Excused absences must be documented and presented to me as soon as possible before or after the absence.  If you must miss a class, you should find out from me or from a classmate what material we covered and then study that material yourself.  One and one-half (1.5) points will be deducted from your final class average for each unexcused class period that you miss.
