CHM 298 Assignment #10 (Due Friday,
March 24 at 5:00)
Manuscript Preparation
The purpose of this task will is to familiarize yourself with the process of preparing a manuscript for publication in the primary scientific literature. Most journals have rather specific guidelines for the formatting of submitted manuscripts. In the case of print journals, these are usually outlined in the front of first issue of any given year. In the case of online journals, information about subscriptions can often be found on the home page of the journal. For this assignment, assume that you are preparing a manuscript for publication in the primary literature (a journal). Make a trip to the library, locate the journal assigned to you, and find the author guidelines for manuscript preparations. Briefly answer each of the following questions in your report.
a) What sort of material is considered to be acceptable for submission to the assigned journal?
b) What is the suggested manuscript length (page or word count, including margins/spacing/font information)?
c) What are acceptable formats for figures/illustrations? Are there any size limitations? Are color illustrations acceptable?
d) Is an abstract required? If so, what is its suggested length (page or word count, including margins/spacing/font information)?
e) If a hard (paper) copy is to be submitted, to whom (and where) is this to be sent?
f) Is electronic submission an option
and/or a requirement? If so, what is the preferred document format?
