CHM 298 Assignment #4 (Due Friday, February 3 by 5:00)
Last week you learned how to access and browse some of the scientifc journals available through the library. Suppose, however, that you are preparing a research paper on a given topic and are in need of journal articles about a particular subject. Browsing all of the journals for articles on a particular topic would certainly not be the best way to go about this! Fortunately there are several ways to search scientific journals. This week we will look at science citation index. To access science citation index, go to the library's main page, and choose "electronic resorces" (which is immediately under "journal finder"). Choose "database title" and scroll down until you find science citation index.
On the main page, you have the option of searching within the past week, a specific year, or a range of years.. Since you are given the year the article was printed, you may choose to search that year only. Alternately, you may wish to search a range that includes the year your article was puiblished. Next, choose "general search" in the upper left corner of the screen. The general serarch allows you to search by topic, author, or by specific journal; we will be doing a topic search. Pretend that you are preparing a research paper on your assigned topic (see the assignment table below). Using science citation index, search for articles on this topic. You may search the topic alone and scroll down until you find the assigned article. Alternately, you may simultaneously search for the topic and the author at the same time.
Once you locate your assigned article, record each of the folloing.
1. The title of the article
2. The journal in which the article appears
3. The volume number and page numbers
Lastly, find one additional article on your assigned topic that you find interesting. Record each of the following.
1. The title of the article
2. The authors of the article
3. The journal in which the article appears
4. The year of publication, volume numbers, and page numbers.
