Science Citation Index - Part 2
Last week you learned how to search for articles on a particular topic using science citation index. However, this is not really the principal feature of science citation index. In addition to looking up the titles, authors, and abstract, science citation index allows you to access the citations of a particular article (they don't call it science "citation" index for nothing!) This is potentially very useful feature.
Here is your assignment. Go back to science citation index and locate the same article assigned to you last week. Science citation index will tell you the number of articles cited by your particular article, ("cited references"), as well as the number of times the article itself was cited by other papers ("times cited"). Answer each of the following questions.
1. How many times has your article been cited by other articles? (Since most are fairly recent articles, the answer may be "zero".)
2. How many works does your article cite?
3. Now click on "cited references." In the last (and most important) part of this assignment you are to locate a particular citation. You are given the author of the paper and/or the title of the journal in which the citation appears (see the assignment table below). You are to list the title of the cited article, the names of all of the authors, and the journal in which the article appears (including the year, volume number, and page numbers). Note that you can do all of this without physically accessing the article itself. This is the beauty of science citation index!
