Course Description: This course is a basic study of the human body in health and disease. This course relates fundamental knowledge about human anatomy and physiology to current issues such as the following focuses: bio-ethical, ecological, health, and visual.

Course Objectives: student successfully completing this course should be able to:

a. Demonstrate knowledge of the purpose, methods, and principles of scientific inquiry.

b. Demonstrate and understand the anatomy and physiology of the human body.

c. Demonstrate an understanding of the integration of how the human organ systems function into a coherent ongoing process rocess known as life.

d. Demonstrate knowledge of the effects of technology upon the physical and human environment.

Attendance: Class attendance is required and will be monitored. No matter what the cause, an absence from class does not relieve the student from any course requirements. There is no such thing as an excused absence. There will be no make-up exams (unless documentation to show cause, such as sickness, death of immediate family members, university related activities, or unavoidable causes (natural, etc.) as determined by the professor. A missed examination, if approved by the professor, must be made up within two school days (including the regular class days that you normally meet)which is subject to modification by the professor. Failure to do so will result in a grade of zero. If a student misses class in excess of the allowed periods, three (3) points will be deducted from the student's final grade per hour of class missed. Attendance will normally be taken at the beginning of the class. It is the student's responsibility to inform the instructor of late arrivals and early departures. Failure to do so will result in the student being marked absent for the entire session.

Evaluation: Five major exams will be given based on the schedule as shown in this syllabus. Each major exam will consist of any combination of the following types of items: true/false, matching, multiple choice and short answer discussion. The lowest of the first four major examimationss will be dropped. A Final Comprehensive Examination will be given. Students are responsible for being aware of any changes in dates of scheduled examinations or any other administrative announcements made during lectures that are missed. Read your Honor Code and be aware of its implications. A second componet of the evaluative criteria consist "Special Out-of-Class Assignment". Each assignment (out of five) will be posted on Blackboard prior to the beginning of a new examination period.

Addendum to Course Syllabus: Penalties govern the evaluation of Out-of-Class Assignents as follows: A. Zero (0) penalty if paper is presented at the beginning of the class period on the date that has been announced. B. Ten (10) points will be deducted from the final grade if paper is submitted one day after the due date. C. Twenty (20) points will deducted from the final grade if the paper is two days late. D. No paper will be accepted for evaluation if presented after the second day of the original due date. No papers will be accepted after the day of the examination (The next day begins at 12:00 AM!!!!)
