                   Essay 2    An in-Class Critical Analysis of an Essay in WID

 

Genre and Topics: Write a short (500-word), in-class,1-draft Critical Analysis of a synthesis essay in WID ch. 7-8: 

   O’Meara “Rooting Out Bad Seeds?”291-6;  Turkle“Loving Technology”252-9; or Stoll “Isolated by Internet”269-76

 

Guidelines (basis for evaluation) for a Short Critical Analysis: see box below

  -As prewriting, answer inform’n, form, rhetoric questions in WID & summary/critique questions (handout) 

  -Write 500-600 words (5-6 paragraphs) about your text, introducing it to a reader who has not read it. 

  -Summarize and critique the essay itself; do not give your own opinions about the issues except in conclusion.   

   -Evaluation is by a checklist, with points for each section.

 

                        Short Critical Analysis of a Nonfiction Text: Format          

 

**For each section, identify 2 or 3 significant features and use 1-2 examples and quotes from the essay.**

 

1. Introduction (1 short paragraph)

    (optional) “hook” and/or interesting information or background on the subject of the essay 

    a. author of the text & credentials; title, genre, publication contexts and     

    b. thesis (or central ideas) and purposes of the text (information, argument, personal)

 

2. Summary or Description of the Content (1 paragraph)

    brief summary of the structure by main sections; write 1-3 sentences per section; specific info & quotes

 

3. Analysis and Evaluation: select two or three for comments and short quotes   (2  paragraphs)

    a. what is special about content: good intro, focused topic, good coverage? interesting, a new contribution?

    b. structure: how clear is organization--unity, beginning, sections, end–and how suited to the content?

    c. specific content & sources of information (analyze sections): examples, kinds of sources, research,
            how complete, accurate, clear? what is emphasized, omitted? are notes from sources well integrated?        
          
-for argument: respond to other views; logic, fairness; for original research: good experiment&research;
     
d. form and rhetoric: what is the genre how well used? how qualified is the author, how effective are  
          
emotional appeals? is there clear writing, effective sentences, symbols, irony, metaphors, allusions?

 

4. Conclusion(s) about value of text to the topic & audience: comment on 1-2 of these (1 short paragraph)

     does the text prove its thesis/fulfill its purposes? is it worth reading/viewing? what audience is suitable?

    (optional) your response to the text: tell what you agree with or disagree with & why;

                        Essay 3     A Synthesis Essay on An Innovation in Science or Technology

 

Directions: Using ideas & information in essays from Writing in Disciplines, plus articles, films, your expertise, write an academic synthesis essay
for non-specialists about an Innovation in Science or Technology. 

    *write a researched essay of about 1000 words  (4-5 pages, 7-10 paragraph). 

    *write to inform readers, objectively, about what is going on; avoid expressing your opinions until the conclusion

    *in the essay refer to 3 to 5 sources (1-2 WID from 1-3 EbscoHost, printed out), use APA credit & References list

 

Evaluation The essay grade is based on these directions and the Essay Guidelines & Criteria  in 105 Writing Guide                                        

Scientific Innovation Topics: Choose a focused topic based on WID  ch. 7-8: one type of robots/AI, one area of internet use,
school crime prediction technology.  Ask Dr. Brown if you have another in mind (requires more research) 

1. Essay Option 1: Explain to educated non-specialists the current situation of your scientific/technology innovation.

       Cover several or all of these aspects of your topic; your essay may use this structure or adapt it

                1. Definition or explanation of the innovation with brief history or background (in intro or 1st body section)

                    [optional. history or explanation that explains the development of the innovation or explains what it does]

                2. Pros: current and/or future benefits associated with this innovation (actual or predicted by experts media)

                3. Cons: current and/or future dangers or problems associated with this innovation (actual or predicted)

                4. Analysis of pros/cons & future potential or advice about how to maximize benefits, reduce dangers       
                                             
               

2. Essay Option 2: Analyze how accurately or intelligently a literary text (e.g. fiction by LeGuin in WID) or a movie
(e.g. Blade Runner, AI, Short Circuit, The Matrix, Minority Report)  reflects the current “state of knowledge” about a related  innovation in science
&/or technology (see topic choices above or research a related innovation).   Include  specific information about the innovation & its effects (see Option 1)
to compare&contrast with the literary/film work.
