General Information

This course is designed to help you succeed at UNCP and in the University Honors College. It is up to you to keep up and come to class prepared each day. We will get to know each other quite well over the semester, and I encourage you all to enter into class discussion and ask questions. I want to form a community that each of you can draw upon throughout your college experience and even beyond.

Take heed of the following:

1. Attendance is mandatory. If you miss class, you are responsible for familiarizing yourself with the material you missed. If you miss 4 or more classes, I can fail  you--no questions asked. I suggest saving your absences for when you are sick or have an emergency; that's what they are for.
2. I do not accept late papers or assignments of any kind without my previous consent. See me ahead of time if  you have problems with assigned due dates. Also, be sure to talk to me if you are  having trouble with assignments.
3 . I would appreciate all work done outside of class to be typed, double-spaced.  However, the career paper and all work included in the portfolio must be typed.
4 . Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated (talking while others are talking, coming in late, cell phones ringing, rude comments, etc.). If behavior like this persists, you will be asked to leave the class and receive a grade of F for the course.
5. Plagiarism will result in an F in the course, and you will be reported to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. If you are unsure of what constitutes plagiarism, please see me to discuss the issue. The University writing center is also an excellent source of information and advice on your writing.

Note: Any student with a documented disability needing academic adjustments is requested to speak directly to Disability Support Services (Career Services Center, Room 210, 521-6270) and the instructor, as early in the semester (preferably within the first week) as possible. All discussions will remain confidential.

 

Assignments and Grading:

The. Freshman Seminar is a graded course. In order to receive a “C” you must earn at least 733 points out of a possible 1000. They must be completed to earn a "C" in the course.

Class Attendance and Participation.................................................... 200 points
Class attendance and punctuality are of absolute importance. Each absence will result in a 50-point reduction from the class attendance points. Students who come to class prepared, regularly, on time and who participate in class will, in all likelihood, receive the 200 points available in this category. (NOTE: You are responsible for anything you miss if you are absent from class, including assignments made or collected, material presented, etc.) A student who misses 4 or more classes without an excused absence will not pass the course.

Convocation………………………………………………………….100 points
All First Year Students at UNC Pembroke are required to attend the Convocation, or Opening Ceremony, on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 10:00 a.m., Givens Performing Arts Center. We will not have our regular Freshman Seminar class on Wednesday, August 31, 2005. At the next class meeting, I want at least one typed page in response to the ceremony and the speaker.

Four-Year Academic Plan..................................................................... 200 points
Using the UNCP Catalog and the Freshman Success Guide, each student is to develop an academic plan for General Education and major requirements at UNCP. Further instructions will be given in class, along with a form for completing the four-year plan. This assignment is due on the day your register for Spring 06 semester.

Blackboard Discussion Forum......................................................................................... 100 points
Beginning the week of August 29, you will post weekly to the Blackboard Discussion Board. The topic is your choice; each message must be a minimum of 10 lines (normal fonts and margins!) You must post at least ten entries to get credit for this activity. You will be able to respond to other students' posts as well as start your own threads. I'm looking for quality discussion on events and topics related to your college experience.

Career Paper....................................................……….................................... 300 points
You are required to complete a career paper that examines scope of the field, salary, graduate education, and career advancement. This referenced paper should be no less than 5 pages double spaced, number 12 font.

Campus Events.......................................................................................... 100 points
You are required to attend four (4) different types of campus events (one of each from among campus-wide cultural, educational, entertainment, and sports events.) during the semester. (Parties sponsored by campus clubs, fraternities, or sororities do not count.) A signature from the Host or Moderator of the event must document your attendance. This will assist with your LSOP requirements.

I use a thousand point grading system. All grades will be given as numbers with final grades computed as follows: A=933-1000; A-=900-932; B+=866-899; B=833-865; B-=800-832; C+=766-799; C=733-765; C-=700-732; D+=666-699; D=633-665; D-=600-632; F=<600.
