Biography
Mark Schwarze began in the substance abuse field in 1997 working with domestic violence offenders with substance abuse problems. He ran an offender intervention group called CHOICES that focused on power and control issues as well as helping group members seek recovery from addiction. In 2001, he took on a new challenge working in prevention and intervention with at-risk adolescents at Palmer Prevention, Inc. in Lumberton, NC. There he developed and led two programs, The Robeson County Teen Court Program, and The Palmer Music Industry Program, both aimed at providing alternatives to drugs and alcohol to low income, high-risk adolescents. In 2002, he accepted a position as a counselor in the Intensive Outpatient Program at the Wilmington Treatment Center. Schwarze provided group and individual counseling and as well as clinical assessments. He also facilitated a family group that allowed family members of addicts and alcoholics to deal with the emotional impact of the disease of addiction. In this position, continued to write and accept speaking engagements to discuss addiction issues.
In 2005, Schwarze accepted the position of Counselor and Coordinator of the Coalition to Prevent Alcohol-Related Consequences at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP), a program that is part of a national research project funded by the NIAAA and led by the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. In 2007, Schwarze’s position was expanded, and he is currently a counselor and coordinates all alcohol and drug programs at UNCP. In addition to his counseling duties, he publishes on how to improve clinical practice with substance abusing clients in national journals, and presents on the same at regional and national conferences.
