Course Objectives: (some of these contribute to the objectives of the General Education Program)
A student successfully completing this course should be able to:
demonstrate an understanding of fundamental concepts of cellular biology, genetics, ecology and evolution;
demonstrate knowledge of the purpose, methods, and principles of scientific inquiry;
better understand self and environment through knowledge of scientific principles and concepts;
demonstrate the knowledge of the effects of technology upon the physical and human environment.
Text:
Biology: Concepts and Connections. 4th ed. Campbell, Mitchell, and Reece. Addision Wesley Longman, Inc.,
CA. (required) A used textbook is fine as long as the CD is also available since you will have assignments based
on this accessory.
Course Required Assignments: There will be three lecture exams and a final comprehensive exam. The three
lecture exams will be worth 22% each, the final exam will be worth 22%, and outside assignments will be worth 12%
of the final grade. All exams will be taken in person on the UNC Pembroke campus and will be proctored with a picture
identification required upon entry. To accommodate the work schedules of enrolled students, a minimum of two scheduled
time periods will be offered for each examination. No make-up exams will be given, resulting in a grade of A0";
therefore, one missed lecture exam may result in an "F" or an incomplete for the course. If an incomplete
is assigned, the exam must be completed in the following semester.
This course is based on the following grading scale:
A = 93-100 B+ = 87-89 C+ = 77-79 D+ = 67-69 F= below 60
A- = 90-92 B = 83-86 C = 74-76 D= 64-66
B- = 80-82 C- = 70-73 D- = 60-63
DISABILITY
Any student with a documented disability needing academic adjustments is requested to speak directly to Disability
Support Services and the instructor, as early in the semester (preferably within the first class week) as possible.
All discussions will remain confidential.
This syllabus is available in alternative formats upon request. Please contact Mary Helen Walker, Disability
