Berlin, Germany
Faculty-Led/Dr. Kevin Freeman
May 11-21, 2012 (Maymester)

AcademicsGerman Flag
This course is intended to give students first- hand knowledge of the history and current politics of Berlin, the capital of Germany.  With a population of 3.45 million people, Berlin is Germany's largest city and the second most populous urban area in the European Union.

First documented in the 13th century, Berlin was the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia (1701–1918), the German Empire (1871–1918), the Weimar Republic (1919–1933) and the Third Reich (1933–1945).  After World War II, the city became divided into East Berlin—the capital of East Germany—and West Berlin, a West German exclave surrounded by the Berlin Wall (1961–1989).  Following German reunification in 1990, the city regained its status as the capital of Germany, hosting 147 foreign
embassies. Berlin is a world city of culture, politics, media, and science.

May 7-May 10, 2012
. The course will begin with mandatory classroom preparation (on-campus), where the students will learn about the history, culture, and politics of Berlin.  From there, we will spend nine days in the city (including two excursions).  Primary focuses will be on (1) the 20th Century history of the city; (2)its role during the Cold War; and (3) its modern culture as a city where Western and Eastern Europe collide politically and culturally.
