Bermuda 2012
Faculty-Led/Summer II

Biology 4100 or 5100 Marine Biology (3 Semester Hours)

A three-week intensive study of marine organisms and communities including two weeks of on-campus lectures, films, slides, and demonstrations (6 hours/day) followed by one week of field study, laboratory work, and films at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS). Course activities in Bermuda average 8 hrs/day. Organismal diversity emphasis will be on fish, invertebrates, algae, and birds. The course also covers basic physical oceanography, marine communities, and ecology. Course grades are determined from 2 lectures, 1 lab exam, a Bermuda species list, and student participation.

Field study in Bermuda will involve about 5-6 snorkeling trips (no SCUBA diving). Some free time will be available for terrestrial sight seeing in Bermuda.

 

Students must be able to swim and feel comfortable in open water. Students must provide their own masks, snorkel, and fins.

Study Abroad Does Not Include

■ Tuition/fees for BIO 4100 (3 credits) or BIO 5100 (3 credits). Must be paid in full prior to departure.

■ Snorkeling equipment

■ UNCP Study Abroad Application Fee ($50). Due at time of application.
■ U.S. Passport fees
■ Meals (off site from BIOS)

■ Airline baggage fees or overweight baggage fees.

Cost of this study abroad is $1,900

Financial Aid

This is an approved study abroad program through  the Center for International Programs and the Biology Department, and may qualify for financial aid. In order to qualify for financial aid a student must be registered for full-time studies (6-credits) in the summer. Most grants, loans, or scholarships should apply to this approved program. Please direct all questions about student financial aid eligibility to the Financial Aid Office.

Payment Plan:
Individual payment plans may be arranged with the Study Abroad Coordinator and are flexible based on a student’s individual financial situation. Please note that all deposits/payments are non-refundable.

 

NOTE: There is a $250 deposit due by January 30, 2012 to secure your spot at BIOS. This study abroad must be paid in full by May 1, 2012.

Eligibility

All students at UNC Pembroke are eligible to participate in the Bermuda Study Abroad, provided that they meet the following minimum requirements:

  • The course is open to all non-freshman students and graduate students who can swim and feel comfortable in open water.
  • Prefer academic majors in biology or environmental science.
  • Completion of 15 credits in residence, minimum, at time of departure, and a completed UNCP Study Abroad Application.
  • Students must have completed BIO 1000.
  • 2.50 GPA at time of application.
  • Register for 3-credit course at UNCP. Not included in the cost of study abroad.
  • Conduct report.  Applicants must be in Good Academic Standing and have no outstanding holds at UNCP (ex. parking tickets, etc).
