English 2490 – Special Topics in English: From Madonna to the Mafia: Italian American Writers Reimagining Italy. From Madonna to the Mafia will expose students to Italian American literature from the early part of the twentieth century up to the present, examining various cultural and social themes such as immigration, race and ethnicity, labor and class conflict as we explore art, architecture, food, fashion, and the extraordinary city landscape of Rome. Imagine viewing Michelangelo’s Pietà in person, sipping café at the Piazza Navona while reading poetry, or listening to opera at the Teatro Flaiano … we will do this and much more as we experience the captivating sights and sounds of Roman culture. The class will consist of online preparatory work, travel to Rome, and an online travel journal. As we visit the museums, churches, and ruins that encompass the ancient city of Rome, we will discover the historical and literary representations of Italy—of what the eternal city symbolizes in the past and present both in fiction and in the real world.
