Problems with Admittance or issuance of a DS-2019

If you are missing items in your application packet or if there is inconsistencies with your information your DS-2019 cannot and will not be issued. Very often, the issuance of these documents is delayed by these problems:

1. Handwriting. If your handwriting cannot be deciphered, particularly as it concerns mailing addresses and contact information, admission will be stalled until you are contacted and provide the correct information.

  • Typing is the most accurate and courteous form of responding.
  • Neat block printing is the second best method.

2. Financial Certification. Proof is required that you can afford to study at UNC Pembroke. The financial certification form will be included in your application package. The most common problems with financial certification are:

  • Estimated expenses are greater than your documented financial resources.
  • The bank certification is not in English or in US dollars.
  • Some or all of your financial certification is more than six months old or will be more than six months old when you attempt to enter the country.
  • Your financial documents have not been properly executed and do not appear to be originals. We cannot accept faxed financial documents.

3. Test Scores.

For undergraduate students, the TOEFL is required for admittance. If you have specific questions about other standardized tests, please contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office. Students interested in playing intercollegiate athletics should contact the individual coaches about SAT and/or ACT requirements for establishing NCAA requirement eligibility.

For graduate students the, TOFEL is required. The GRE, MAT, or the GMAT (for business only) is required for admittance. Please contact the Graduate Admissions Office for specific information.

  • A minimum of 500 (paper based) is required on the TOFEL exam to enter most academic programs at UNCP. A minimum of 550 (paper based) is required to enter any English/Education program.
  • A 173 computer based TOFEL is equivalent to a 500 paper based score.
  • A 61 on the internet based TOFEL is equivalent to a 500 paper based score as well as the computer based score.

For more information, please see www.ets.org. This site provides information on each standardized test, testing information, etc.

4. Major Declaration. A projected field of study is required on the I-20 and the DS-2019. Make sure to specify on the application, under major, what your program of study will be. For a list of major codes please click here.

5. Postal Information. In order for your documents to be sent there are several things to keep in mind.

  • Most international delivery services do not and will not deliver to a PO Box, therefore, make sure to include in your application a complete physical address where the documents can be sent to, and in many situations, signed for.
  • The documents must be sent outside of the US.
  • Acceptance packets must be sent to the person the documents are issued to.

6. Personal Information. It is important that all of your information is correct so make sure you keep the following in mind.

  • Your name is written exactly as it appears in your passport. This includes middle names and hyphenated last names. Submitting a copy of your passport along with your application will ensure the correct name is used on the immigration documents.
  • Make sure to submit your date of birth as day, month, and year, i.e. dd/mm/yyyy.
