Croatan Normal School - Original Building - About 1888In 2001, the Lumbee River Fund will launch "Telling Our Own Stories," a photography and oral history project that documents the history of the Lumbee from our own perspectives. We will work together to preserve family photographs, gather oral histories with elders, and contribute to archives that remain in the Indian community for students and scholars to use.

We will also present our discoveries in photography exhibits and a symposium series.

With your help, "Telling Our Own Stories" can provide a valuable service. Indian families can obtain new copies of their valued photographs and a record of an elder's stories and wisdom to pass on to younger generations. Historical preservation builds community and inspires us to discuss how the past can teach us about our present and future.
