UNCP Regional Center director certified to conduct ‘Points of Light’ Youth Leadership Institute
Sylvia Pate of UNC Pembroke was recently certified as a trainer for The Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute.
The institute is a unique training program designed to give high-school age youth the ability and desire to make meaningful, lifelong contributions to their communities through volunteer service.
The Regional Center plans to begin offering The Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute in the near future in various schedule formats.
Pate recently attended an intensive three-day training seminar in Dallas, Texas, where she learned the elements of the institute’s curriculum and was trained in how to deliver them to young people in the area. She is the director of UNCP’s Regional Center for Economic, Community and Professional Development, with extensive experience in workforce and leadership development programs.
“This is a high-quality program that provides a curriculum that can stand on its own but is flexible enough that it can be adapted and integrated to meet the needs of our local community,” Pate said. “The program consists of mini-lectures, but, most importantly, the majority of the activities are experiential with the culmination of a community service project.”
Pate said indications are that there has been a decline in civic involvement, and this program is useful to counter that trend.
“While the current generation of youth have the potential to help reverse this trend, they need encouragement and support to realize this potential,” she said. “It is a very stimulating, exciting program that will enable more local young people to take their ideas and enthusiasm for making a difference in their communities, and turn them into action.”
The institute’s interactive, state-of-the art curriculum was developed by the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, N.C., one of the world’s foremost authorities on leadership principles.
The curriculum provides the caliber of leadership training typically available only to corporate executives and government leaders. It features a challenging series of lessons and exercises on goal setting, team building, project planning, decision-making and other leadership dynamics.
The program culminates in a service project, created and implemented by the participants and a final graduation ceremony.
