Farm Bureau BioAg Symposium to focus on pesticides

UNC Pembroke’s 3rd annual Robeson Farm Bureau BioAg Symposium will be held on Thursday, February 2, in the Regional Center for Economic, Community and Professional Development at COMtech.

The 2012 BioAg Symposium focuses on Pesticides, cotton, corn, soybeans and wheat. Continuing education credits are available for pesticide licensing, and participants should bring their current license.

Registration is at 8 a.m. with the program starting at 9 a.m. Admission is free and lunch is provided.

Keynote speakers will be North Carolina Farm Bureau President Larry B. Wooten and Cathy Graham, director of the Robeson Cooperative Extension Services.

Four agricultural scientists from NC State University will give workshops including: Dr. Keith Edmisten, cotton specialist; Dr. Ron Heiniger, corn, soybean and small grain specialist; Dr. Dominic Reisig, entomologist; and Dr. Randy Weisz, small grain extension specialist.

UNCP’s academic and research programs will be on display. Farm Bureau Scholar Cameron Adams will discuss his research and bio-pesticides, including nematodes.

Displays will be set up for the new undergraduate sustainable agriculture track by biology professor Dr. Deborah Hanmer; biofuels program by chemistry professor Dr. Rachel Smith; Pembroke Farmer’s Market by Emily Locklear of the Regional Center; and the honeybee project by business professor Dr. Charles Harrington.

UNCP’s Biotechnology Training and Research Center organizes the annual event. “We have capacity for 150 participants, and we are expecting good attendance from across the region,” said Dr. Holmes, who is directing his third Bio-Ag Symposium. “Besides our Farm Bureau sponsorship, we welcome the Robeson County Agricultural Extension Service as a partner.”

Also underwriting the symposium are Care Fear Farm Credit and AgriSupply Company.
