University celebrates 60 years of Miss UNCP pageants

The past and future of the Miss UNCP Scholarship Pageant will come together on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., February 2, in the Givens Performing Arts Center for the crowning of the 2012 Miss UNCP.

Seven contestants will vie for the crown and the right to represent UNCP in the Miss North Carolina Pageant. The 2012 Miss UNCP will receive a $1,000 scholarship, free student housing and meal plan for one year and a $1,000 wardrobe allowance. First runner-up receives a $500 scholarship; and second runner-up, $300.  Non-Finalists will receive $100 scholarships.

The theme for 2012 is “Keeping the Legacy Alive: 60 Years of Service.” While contestants compete for the 2012 crown, 20 former Miss UNCP’s, representing the pageant’s 60-year history, will be special guests. The former queens, including the first, Miss Pembroke State College 1952 Rosa Woods, will be recognized on stage during the pageant.

Five former queens will perform at 6:30 p.m. before the start of the pageant at 7 p.m., including Teresa Oxendine - 1974; Kristy Woods-Billings - 1989; Morgan Hunt Warriax - 2005; Karen Jenkins - 1966; Katy Locklear - 2009 (Miss Metrolina 2012); Jamee Hunt -2008 and Pia Jessup, a former contestant who became Miss Black North Carolina USA. Emcee of this program is UNCP Alumni Director Renee Steele, who was Miss UNCP 1991.

In honor of its 60th year, the former queens have launched a fundraiser for the Miss UNCP Scholarship Pageant. They are selling 1,000, $25 tickets to win a 2010 Ford Focus or cash.

Miss UNCP 2011 Chasity Chavis will give a farewell performance and crown the new queen.Miss North Carolina 2011 Hailey Best and Michelle Braxton are mistresses of ceremony for the evening. Contestants for the 2012 crown will compete in five categories: interview, swimsuit, talent, eveningwear and an on-stage question.
