Founders’ Week Activities, March 4-8
In conjunction with the university’s 125th anniversary celebration, UNCP will host a series of events the week of March 4-8 that coincide with Founders’ Day on March 7. The weeklong events will highlight the history and heritage of the university including 125 years of university leadership and the 90th anniversary of Old Main, the oldest and most iconic building on campus. The Heritage Oak will be planted in the Quad next to Old Main and the Hawk Walk trail will be opened for walkers. Events are open to the public.
March 4-8: Heritage T-shirts on sale
Limited quantities of the Heritage T-shirts will be on sale for $9.95 (plus tax) at the UNCP Bookstore. Heritage T-shirts are seven shirts with one of the seven different names of the school on the front and the 125th logo with all seven names on the back.
March 5: Celebration of Old Main’s 90th Anniversary
2013 marks historic Old Main’s 90th anniversary. Various individuals associated with the building during its 90 years will be recognized. They include: Judge L.R. Varser of Lumberton, N.C., a member of the General Assembly who secured funding for the construction of Old Main in 1923; leaders of Save Old Main Movement who advocated for saving the building in the early 1970s; former N.C. Gov. James Holshouser who secured funding for the restoration of Old Main after it burned in 1973; and members of the Old Main Commission who lead efforts to restore the building after the destructive fire. The celebration will be held in the Native American Resource Center in Old Main, beginning with a reception at 6 p.m. and the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by the 125th Anniversary Committee and the Native American Resource Center.
March 6 – May 6: “UNCP, Then and Now”
Mannequins dressed in period clothing from six eras in the university's history (1880s, 1920s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s/70s and 1980s) will be on display in the Main Reading Room and Lobby of the Livermore Library. The mannequins will be on display through Commencement, May 3 - 4.
March 7: Founders’ Day Ceremony
The Founders’ Day ceremony will celebrate the history of the university and the recent establishment of the Southeast Indian Studies program. Former and current presidents, chancellors and members of the Board of Trustees will be recognized for leadership provided to the institution. Gloria Tara Lowery will also be recognized for her design of Braves athletic logo in 1992. The event begins at 2 p.m. in the Givens Performing Arts Center.

March 7: Dedication of Heritage Oak
At 3:30 p.m., the Heritage Oak, a symbol of the 125th anniversary celebration, will be dedicated in the Quad next to historic Old Main. The willow oak was donated by Green Biz Nursery and Landscaping in Fayetteville, N.C. A stone marker to be placed at the base of the tree was donated by the 125th Anniversary Committee.
March 7: Grand Opening of Hawk Walk Trail
Immediately after the dedication of the Heritage Oak, the grand opening of the Hawk Walk trail will be held at 4 p.m. in front of the James B. Chavis University Center. The Hawk Walk is a two-mile walking trail that snakes through UNCP’s picturesque campus.
