Dr. Emily Long receives NC Ready for Success Award (8/16/13)
Dr. Emily Long, Professor, School of Education, Department of Elementary Education, has received a $8,910 award from the NC Ready for Success program for a Tier II Supporting Alignment for Student Sucess (SASS) Mini-grant. This one year award (August 2013 to June 2014) will strengthen partnerships between UNCP teacher educators and practicing K-12 public school teachers in our service region. Project activities will include collaborative faculty/teacher meetings to design, develop, implement, and assess K-12 English Language Arts instructional practices and designs aligned with the new Common Core Standards and a culminating plenary session in Spring 2014 to share the work of the partnership.
Dr. Sara Simmons receives Z. Smith Reynolds Award (8/2/13)
Dr. Sara Simmons, Professor, School of Education, Professional Pedagogy and Research, has received a $110,000 award from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation for Project PREP (Partnership for the Retention of Education Professionals). This two year grant (August 2013 to July 2015), which is a collaborative partnership with 5 Local Education Agencies (LEAs), supports beginning teachers in southeastern NC through training and mentoring. The program will develop a comprehensive induction program and targeted professional development opportunities for the new teachers and their mentors. Program activities will include: LEA-based specialists will conduct targeted beginning teacher support activities as defined by district-identified needs; ongoing mentor professional development that is aligned with the NC Mentor Standards; leadership development sessions for identified LEA leaders; training for the LEA specialists in the effective use of technology; and institutes for beginning teachers.
Dr. John Parnell receives Koch Foundation Award (6/28/13)
Dr. John Parnell, William Henry Belk Professor of Management, School of Business, has received a $5,000 grant from the Charles Koch Foundation to conduct a guest speaker series on the UNCP campus in Fall 2013. Dr. Larry Reed, President of the Foundation for Economic Education, will speak on character and the links with liberty and free enterprise on September 3, 3:30 pm at the UC Annex. Dr. Brad Thompson, Executive Director of the Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism, will speak on October 16, 3:30 pm at Moore Hall.
