Program Changes: This Spring we implemented a “day session” in the graduate program. Two core courses are offered this semester. This sequence will change in the Fall to a core and an elective. In the Spring 2005 we would like to increase the amount of day session offerings to three courses. Currently there are 15 students in the Monday, Wednesday, Organizational Behavior and 16 students in the Tuesday and Thursday Leadership and Administration Class.
Planning: Drs. Schneider and Barbee are in the planning stages of an Emergency Management concentration. Four courses will be required; however, the concentration would be flexible with three core concentration courses and a choice among options for a fourth concentration course.
On-Line MPA: This Fall we will complete the coursework sequence for the on-line MPA program. There has been a one core and one elective offering each semester for the past two years. Currently there are 41 students in WEB Organizational Behavior and 28 in WEB Economic Analysis. It is hoped that we may offer more than two on-line courses in Spring 2005. Students are requesting the availability of concentration courses in Health and Criminal Justice on the web.
NASPAA Accreditation: On Thursday, February 19, 2004, we will convene the first meeting of the MPA Advisory Board. The Board is made up of faculty and administrative members of UNCP, community leaders, alumni, and present students. The purpose of the advisory board is to participate in the formulation of a program mission statement and to give input and advise on curriculum content and future program direction. NASPAA accreditation standards emphasize an involved advisory board.
MPA Home Page: The MPA program now has an official web site. It can be accessed at www.uncp.edu/mpa/. Please visit the site and contact us for content recommendations or suggestions. These “activity updates” will also be archived on this site.
Pi Alpha Alpha: The Honor Society will have its annual induction dinner on Thursday, April 29 at 7:00PM (tentative) in the UC. Our inaugural ceremony (last November) was very well attended.
UNCP/CUMT and China: Our program with China is on schedule to complete 36 hours of course work by December of 2004. Currently Dr. Frank Trapp in XuZhou to be followed by Drs. Albrecht, Schneider, Barbee, Hawthorne, and Broscheid. While Dr. Schneider is in XuZhou, he will explore MPA options with a university in Harbin, China. There are 10 students at CUMT.
Student and Alumni News: Congratulations to the following students for their accomplishments and endeavors:
Database: To improve our database of student information, a survey will be distributed next week to all currently enrolled students. We ask your cooperation for a complete and quick response.
Regional Reach-out: Our regional advertising: “MPA ALL DAY” has been very successful. We are attracting more students and inquiries. We also note an increase in students who are entering (and applying to) the MPA following their undergraduate work.
