Beth Alsobrook will graduate with a concentration in Health Administration and Jamie Baker Smith will graduate with a concentration in Criminal Justice. Three students in the CUMT/UNCP program are graduating (see below). Congratulations to all these students and to the faculty.

Scholarship Winner at UNCP: We are proud to announce that Sherry Hunt is the winner of the 2004-2005 North Carolina City and County Management Association scholarship. Sherry will receive $1800 scholarship. Sherry competed with other MPA students in an essay contest, and her essay, “The Importance of Ethical Decision Making in the Public Sector won the award.

Fall Admissions: To date we have admitted 11 students this fall into the MPA program. These are admits since the last newsletter in the Fall. We anticipate that there will be additional admissions before classes begin in January 2005.

Spring 2005 Course Offerings: Once again the MPA program will offer a full array of graduate courses in various modalities and times. We are offering three day-session classes, five on-line (web) classes and eight evening-session classes for a total of 16 course offerings. Alumni and Student Association: Lawrence Locklear is continuing to organize the student and Alumni association for MPA students and grads. For information on upcoming events contact Lawrence at Lawrence.locklear@uncp.edu

MPA Board of Advisors: The Board of Advisors met in November for their quarterly meeting. Agenda items included program growth in students, alumni, course offering and international and on-line programs.

Newsletter Announcement: Please announce to your classes that the Newsletter is posted on the MPA website at www.uncp.edu/mpa then click on “News and Events.” This issue will be the final issue for this academic year. Volume III will begin in the Spring.

China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT): Three students in our CUMT/UNCP program will receive their Masters degree on December 11. These students will arrive on campus on December 8th. They are: Lan Cui (Lisa), Gang Wu (Richard), Yanqui Wang (Autumn). We congratulate these students and the faculty. After graduation student will be traveling to Washington with Dr. Chen, Myrtle Beach with Beth Carmichael, and then on to New York. We anticipate that the remaining students will graduate in May 2005.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (South Africa): Beginning in the Fall 2005 semester, Dr Henry Wisnick from the Nelson Mandela University in South Africa will exchange with Dr. Robert Schneider to teach the first exchange of faculty course. The course will be MPM 550, Public Institutions and Processes. Dr. Wisnick will arrive at UNCP in August and teach two weekend immersion sessions and the remainder of the course online. Dr Schneider will travel to South Africa in July 2005 and follow the same format.
