Black and Gold Player Spotlight The Pine Needle sits down with UNCP’s Rachel Young to discuss team goals and the volleyball star’s upcoming sophomore season By J. Markus Franklin Q. Your impact on the team this year?A. I am hoping to bring consistency to our team and help take the pressure off the freshmen so we can be successful this year. Q. How long have you been playing volleyball? A. I have been playing since the seventh grade. So I guess that’s about eight years I have been playing. Q. How is your relationship with your coach. A. The entire team has a good relationship with Coach Billington. During the offseason he would hold one-on-one training with all of the girls to show them what they needed work on. Q. Why did you choose UNCP? A. Well, they have a good communications program and because I wanted to go to school in North Carolina, plus UNCP offered me a scholarship. That helped a lot financially, and it doesn’t hurt that the beach isn’t far away. Q. How do you spend your free time as a student? A. I am a part of the Baptist ministry here on campus, and I am also a member of PRSSA, but other than that I usually go to the pool when I can or catch a movie in Lumberton. Q. Do you have a favorite athlete? A. Misty May-Treanor. I enjoyed watching her play this summer at the Olympics in Beijing. Q. What is the last movie you saw in the theatre? A. “The Dark Knight.” It was awesome.
