UNCP students will be working during the summer

Staff Writer

Some UNCP students will be engaged in a variety of activities over the summer break. A large majority of students will be working this summer doing various jobs or in summer school and surprisingly enough, that is how some of them want it.

Freshman Heather Garner will be working at Chatham Hospital during her summer vacation. At the hospital, Garner will hold the job of filing papers that concern x-ray patients.
“I enjoy filing. I don’t have to deal with any people,” Garner said.

Garner will also take some summer courses at Central Carolina Community College over the summer. She will take a total of nine hours that will consist of classes in biology, sociology and statistics.

Garner is not at all happy about going to summer school.

“I am not excited. I’d rather work any day. I get paid for working,” Garner said.

Jessica Carter, a junior, is trying to find a job in Fayetteville for the summer. If that does not work out, she will work with her father.

“If I don’t find a tax-paying job (in Fayetteville), I’ll probably be working on the farm with my Daddy (in St. Pauls),” Carter said.

Melinda Laughren, also a junior, will be working at Surfers Restaurant near her home in Oak Island, N.C.

Laughren is not especially thrilled about working over the summer.

“I’m kind of bummed about it, but I’ll be okay,” Laughren said, “I got to work to come here.”

Laughren will have a break from her job when she goes to Tennessee for her family reunion.

Senior Jessica Park will be working at a job that will involve one of the things that she loves most - music. Park will be working as a director of music back at her home in Clinton, N.C.

When asked how she felt about her directorial job, she said, “I’m happy to be directing music.”

Dominique Mack, a freshman, will be working in summer school at the local community college where she lives in Goldsboro, NC. She is planning on taking a few hours of classes.

“I’m going to get a head start on my credits to graduate,” Mack said.

She said that the classes would keep her busy while she is out on break. She also hopes to get a job that will keep her busy and fill her purse with some money.

Senior Toderick Kirk will also be working by taking some summer courses. Kirk, who is an upcoming graduate, will be taking classes here at Pembroke. Kirk will be taking science classes for the nursing program he is entering in the fall.

Kirk is content with his summer plans, but most of all, he is happy he is graduating.

“I’m happy about this summer, leaving (graduating),” Kirk said.

Some other plans UNCP students have for the summer include going out of state, visiting family and going on a cruise. A lot of students will have some interesting stories to tell when they return in the fall whether they will be working or not.
