Webber’s “CATS” is coming to GPAC Thursday, Feb.
12 at 7 p.m.
Loved by millions worldwide, ”CATS” lives up to its
motto, “Now and Forever.”
The idea for
“CATS” started in 1977 when Lloyd Webber picked up a
copy of T.S Eliot’s book of poems, “Old Possum’s
Book of Practical Cats.”
“CATS”
has won seven Tony Awards and two production awards, which are the
Laurence Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical, for
the score by Lloyd Webber for his groundbreaking musical.
The story follows
the exploits of a variety of feline friends who are gathering for
the Jellicle Ball. During the ball, only one cat will be bestowed
with a precious extra life, and the tension begins to build up and
mount.
In 1981, Lloyd
Webber wrote “CATS,” his biggest hit. “CATS”
is a great first musical for anyone, because of its simple plot,
interesting costumes and its set is a giant junkyard.
Lloyd Webber’s theatrical sensation has dazzled audiences
worldwide and has earned a reputation as one of the world’s
favorite musicals.
“CATS”
has played to packed houses in approximately 250 cities in 20 countries
around the world and has been translated into 10 languages.
It is estimated
that over 48 million people have seen the show.
The show’s
most famous song, “Memory,” has now become one of the
most successful songs in musical history, with the original recording
by Elaine Paige reaching No. 5 in the British charts in June 1981,
and the song has since been recorded by over 160 artists.
Tickets for “CATS” are $28-$30 for faculty and staff
and $10 for children and UNCP students. |
