Alphas dance at UC

By Nicole Lord
Entertainment Editor

The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity sponsored a “blackout” dance Sept. 1 in the University Center. The dance started at 10 p.m. and ended at around 1 a.m.

The dance was a fundraising opportunity for the fraternity.

“As a fraternity we have to pay bills,” said member Raji Johnson.

Students were encouraged to dress in all black, for the “blackout” theme. Many students did dress in black, while others had variations. Some students wore black shirts with blue jeans, and some students did not wear black at all.

“It is just a theme to get people to participate more,” Johnson said about the reason for the all black attire.

By 11:30 p.m. the dance floor was full. The students, mainly freshmen, had already found space on the floor and were having a good time.

“I pretty much knew we would have a good turnout,” said member Delorian Miller in response to the large crown on the dance floor.

The crowd was not made up of only UNCP students, but also students from other colleges. The fraternity invited their “brothers” from UNC Wilmington, Fayetteville State and Francis Marion.

At the end of the night, the Alphas offered a prize for best-dressed female in all black. Six volunteered and took the stage.

They were asked to walk “the runway,” which was right down the middle of the dance floor. The winner was determined by crowd applause.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Nicole Lord, a junior and entertainment editor of the Pine Needle, won the contest. She was awarded a $25 gift certificate for Shell gas.
