Art department debuts gallery, exhibit on display until Sept. 28

By Margaret Damghani
Staff Writer

On Sept. 7 the Art Department in Locklear Hall opened the doors to its gallery for the first time. The opening exhibition, “New Dimensions: UNCP Faculty Art Exhibition,” featured live music, refreshments and a variety of artistic pieces. The current exhibition will be displayed from Sept. 7-28.

The new gallery boasts 960 square feet and is considered by students and faculty to be a huge improvement over the last gallery. The gallery aids the Art Department in its goal of offering higher quality education for its students and visitors.

Dr. Richard Gay, an assistant professor who teaches art history, is the gallery director. He is excited about the possibilities for the future. The new gallery is much more versatile than the one before it. The high ceilings make it possible to display tall pieces of art, or even hang something from the ceiling.

There are pieces ranging from ceramics and bronze to acrylics and photography.

The pieces on display are examples of artwork made by the faculty of the Art Department and are all examples of techniques taught here at UNCP.

Renovations in Locklear Hall have improved the Art Department overall. Above the Art Gallery is a new second floor that consolidated all of the faculty offices. Other renovations include a skylight, new painting studios, a lecture hall and a digital showroom.

The Gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 9-4, and Fridays 9-3.
