‘New Reflections’ wins talent show

With 22 performers in this year's talent show, it's no wonder why the seats of GPAC were filled on Sept. 8.

With Deena Metro from HOT 104.5 as the host for the evening, the night was off to a good start. The panel of judges included Tashia Oxendine, Cynthia Redford, Scott Whitman and Mary McKenzie.

The 2005 UNCP talent show provided a little something for everyone ranging from hip hop dance, to rap, to gospel, and even to beautifully sung ballads.

Freshmen Alex Ward, who performed a solo dance piece with a hip-hop flare, kicked off the evening. There were some good performances with standing ovations, while others were given the kindness of a few claps from their friends and family.

Although students can be harsh at times, the group "New Reflections" was given the full attention of the audience, as these three fine young men poured their hearts out on stage for everyone to hear. Like many of the performers that evening, "New Reflections" performed an original song. They captured first place.

"My girlfriend and I were going through a hard time, just basic everyday life," said Alston Brayboy, who wrote the song "Not Loving You." Alston, along with Lee Oxendine, and Eric Carter, make up the group "New Reflections."

Joey Kirk, the runner-up for this year's talent show and a seasoned performer, said, "[New Reflections] were good and they have great potential!" Kirk also performed an original piece, entitled "I Sing a Song." Kirk poured his heart out on stage with this highly inspirational poetic piece of music.

Although everyone did their best, some had just wooed the judges a little more easily.

Third place went to the talented quartet "Show me the Money Entertainment."

Second place was junior Joey Kirk, and first place went to "New Reflections."
